Bitstream Unveils TrueDoc Technology

The First Complete Font Fidelity Solution for Portable Electronic
Documents

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--September 12, 1994 Bitstream Inc. today announced
the launch of its new Bitstream TrueDoc type imaging technology. TrueDoc
is a software development kit (SDK) for OEMs and ISVs that are developing
solutions for portable electronic documents. It is the only solution that
fully addresses and solves the font fidelity problems commonly associated
with portable documents--those of size, performance, scalability, device &
resolution independence, and typographic quality. TrueDoc maintains the
original look and feel of electronic documents on all screens and
printers. The SDK is now available from Bitstream Inc.

"Taking into consideration the roadblocks of various hardware and software
options, preserving the intended appearance of electronic documents is no
easy task," said Ray Boelig, president and CEO of Bitstream. "As we
contemplate the age of the paperless office, the look and feel of a
document becomes as important as its content." Bitstream will begin
licensing the software development kit immediately and has already signed
a major agreement with No Hands Software for inclusion of the TrueDoc
technology in its 2.0 version of Common Ground.

Worry-free Font Solution for Portable Documents

Portable documents created by Adobe System's Acrobat, No Hands Software's
Common Ground, Novell/Wordperfect's Envoy and Farallon's Replica allow
viewing of electronic documents regardless of platform, hardware or
software. But these universal viewers suffer from a host of font-related
problems such as large document size, slow speed, incompatible font
formats and poor quality when dealing with devices with differing
resolutions. Documents that use different font formats such as TrueType
and PostScript complicate the viewing of electronic documents as they move
over a network.

TrueDoc eliminates font problems in electronic documents so that they can
be interchanged among platforms--independent of the font format,
application, character set, language or operating system. It frees authors
to employ any combination of fonts in any format and guarantees that all
readers can view and print, regardless of whether those same fonts are
installed on his system. This solution is especially advantageous for
organizations with heterogeneous computer networks.

TrueDoc Targets Many Markets and Future Architectures

The need to both distribute and receive well-presented and readable
information spans all markets. TrueDoc technology can be integrated to
enhance electronic publishing, on-line services, faxing, E-Mail messaging,
CD-ROM authoring, electronic books and electronic advertising. "As the
world becomes better connected, all documents and electronic information,
including multilingual documents, must be easy to produce, view and
transfer economically. TrueDoc was developed with this future in sharp
focus," said Mr. Boelig. TrueDoc has the potential to be incorporated in
operating systems and component architectures to integrate document
editing, viewing and management functions.

"TrueDoc technology addresses a real need in many digital communications
markets for total fidelity across the board. Fonts should be an
enhancement, not a hassle. In the future, this type of technology should
be migrated away from the application level and into the underlying
architecture," said Rob Auster of BIS Strategic Decisions.

Understanding TrueDoc Technology

TrueDoc technology records character shapes at the authoring end of
electronic documents, stores them along with the documents in a compact
manner and plays them back at the viewing end. The three major components
are the Character Shape Recorder (CSR), the Character Shape Player (CSP)
and the Portable Font Resource (PFR). The platform-independent CSR accepts
any character outline from all font processors, along with a font
identifier and character code. The CSR scans the shapes of the characters
and curvefits them, then automatically generates fundamental hints, which
are stored together in a compressed format called the PFR. TrueDoc's CSR
manages the PFR while recording, sharing duplicate images whenever
possible across fonts to minimize the size of the PFR The CSR typically
resides in the portable document driver while the PFR is attached to the
document. The CSP rasterizes the PFR on demand. It uses a high performance
bitmap cache for fast character-generation speed, and is platform,
resolution, and device independent. The CSP is small and fast, making it
ideal for embedding within document viewer applications.

In addition, to enhance performance when printing to specific output
devices, Bitstream provides Font Reconstitution Modules to convert the
characters in the Portable Font Resource into PostScript Type 1, TrueType
or HP Soft Font format so that documents can print at optimum speeds.

TrueDoc technology does not embed fonts within portable documents, so file
size remains small. It also does not rely on font-matching or
font-substitution technologies, ensuring that documents look as they were
intended to look. The TrueDoc Portable Font Resource is a compact addition
to the portable document that guarantees font fidelity on the receiving
end. "TrueDoc's compactness and speed make it an ideal solution for future
architectures in many digital communications markets," said Glen Rippel,
Senior Product Manager at Bitstream.
