OVER 400 APPLICATIONS FOR SYBASE NOW SHIPPING

Over 100% Growth in Availability of SYBASE Applications From 1993 to 1994

EMERYVILLE, CA, September 21, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that more than 400 third-party
applications supporting SYBASE client/server software are now shipping.
The broad availability of applications developed for the SYBASE
architecture reflects the success of Sybase's Open Solutions' program in
delivering open, best-in-class solutions to Sybase customers by working
closely with third-party suppliers. The 400-plus applications are
available across a range of operating systems. They support a broad
spectrum of horizontal and vertical markets including manufacturing, human
resources, financial services, sales force automation, accounting and
healthcare.

"As client/server computing rapidly moves into the mainstream, it brings an
increasing demand by customers for off-the-shelf application solutions to
manage their business operations," said Verne Dykema, vice president of
channel sales and marketing. "Sybase is not in the applications business.
Instead, through our Open Solutions program, we have focused on partnering
with the innovators in client/server to deliver best-in-class solutions
developed for the SYBASE architecture. The program has grown significantly
in both the number of partners and the availability of partner dedicated
resources over the past year. Consequently, we have more than 400
client/server applications now available to Sybase customers."

The Open Solutions program is the company's third-party channel program
which includes Value Added Reseller, Systems Integrator, and Independent
Software Vendor partners; as of Q2 '94, over 20% of Sybase sales revenues
were generated through these indirect channels.

Software Developers Praise Open Solutions Partnerships with Sybase

"Our customer, AT&T Network Systems, turned to Aurum for a broader,
enterprise-wide solution that encompassed customer service management
contract administration, inventory control, material planning, and
purchasing," said Jeff Kilbreth, director of product marketing for Aurum
Software, a Santa Clara, CA-based provider of Sales Force Automation
software. "Because of the flexibility of the SYBASE architecture and the
company's partnering approach to providing customers with complete
solutions, we were able to build a complementary, integrated solution for
AT&T with Avalon Software and LPA Software."

"We selected SYBASE as a database platform in 1989 because of its leading
client/server architecture," said M.R. Rangaswami, vice president of
marketing, Avalon Software, a developer of manufacturing resource planning
applications located in Tucson, AZ. "We released our enterprise
applications suite in 1991 and the Avalon applications have gained
tremendous market acceptance with the Fortune 500. Our five year
relationship with Sybase has been fruitful, and we look forward to an even
better partnership as Sybase strengthens its applications portfolio."

"From our inception, we chose SYBASE as a database platform because we saw
the necessity to support progressive new business processes among our
client base," said Bill Fitzpatrick, vice president of development at the
Dodge Group, a developer of financial applications located in Waltham, MA.
"Sybase's strong market presence combined with the flexibility of the
SYBASE architecture allows us to develop a solution that provides optimal
interoperability for our customers and tremendous flexibility for our
developers."

"Our longstanding commitment to developing applications for the SYBASE SQL
Server continues to be strategic for D&B," said John Pepe, senior vice
president of development at Dun & Bradstreet Software, a developer of
software products and services for distributed client/server transaction
processing and decision support tools, and IBM host-based applications.
"Our comprehensive suite of client/server applications takes advantage of
the SYBASE architecture in order to provide superior performance to our
customers."

"FlexiInternational Software has seen Sybase provide database innovations,
such as stored procedures and triggers, that consistently increase the
performance of our products," said Jim Schenck, executive vice president
of product development, FlexiInternational Software, Inc., a financial
applications provider based in Shelton, CT. "We've found that by taking
advantage of the Sybase architecture, we're able to upgrade to newer
versions of the SYBASE SQL Server without encountering significant
obstacles. We're also able to link smoothly to new features, like
extensions to stored procedures, that greatly enhance the quality of the
solution we provide to our customers."

"We recently announced the GENESYS Enterprise Series for SYBASE System 10
and joined the Sybase Open Solutions program for VARs," said Lawrence J.
Munini, president of GENESYS Software Systems, Inc., a provider of
client/server human resource (HR), benefits and payroll applications. "We
chose SYBASE as the first platform for our GENESYS Enterprise Series due
to customer demand. GENESYS worked closely with Sybase to develop an
advanced three-tiered client/server solution to provide our customers with
enhanced system performance, and a truly distributed, scalable, and
cost-effective computing environment."

"We chose to optimize SeQuel to Platinum financial for SYBASE SQL Server
because it's the most advanced database available for client/server
financial systems," said David Proctor, president and COO of Platinum
Software Corp., a developer of LAN-based and client/server financial
software located in Irvine, CA. "The strength of the Sybase architecture,
particularly the way it handles triggers and stored procedures, allows our
financial applications to deliver throughput that rivals mainframe-level
processing speeds. Sybase technology will continue to play a major role in
our expanding product plans."

"We have maintained a close relationship with Sybase since the inception of
our company," states Cindy Padnos, vice president of marketing at Scopus
Technology, Inc., an Emeryville, CA-based provider of client/server
applications for customer and product information management. "Our
original product offerings were developed on SYBASE due to the advanced
client/server functionality offered by SYBASE SQL Server. The Scopus
ProTEAM family of applications makes significant use of Sybase stored
procedures and triggers to deliver applications that can be easily
customized to match customers' unique business processes."

Open Solutions Program Fosters Partner Development Efforts on SYBASE

Key to the wide availability of applications for SYBASE software has been a
focused technology-transfer effort through the Sybase Open Solutions
program. The goal of this effort is to provide third parties with
technical programs that enable them to deliver products to market quickly
and to offer the support infrastructure that will foster customer
success.

The third-party suppliers of the 400-plus SYBASE-based applications are all
Open Solutions partners who have demonstrated the technical expertise
required to optimize their solutions on the SYBASE architecture. Key
technology-transfer programs offered to Open Solutions partners include:

* Sybase Partner Developer Conferences - a vehicle designed to provide
Sybase VARs, ISVs and System Integrators with technical expertise required
to develop their solutions on the SYBASE architecture.

* STEP Classes - STEP, Sybase Technology Eduction Program, is a
partner-specific class conducted at Sybase education centers worldwide. It
is a week-long program designed to provide faster-paced product training
to the senior technical employees of Open Solutions Partners.

* Partner Technology Updates - a vehicle designed to bring together
strategic Sybase Open Solutions Partners and key members of Sybase's
product marketing and engineering organizations to initiate a dialogue
about current and future product directions.

* Technical Conference Calls - present important technical information in a
convenient manner to the people within the Open Solutions program who need
it. Calls have been held on a monthly basis since February; topics
discussed have included "Migrating to SYBASE System 10" and "SYBASE
Enterprise CONNECT."

* Sybase OpenLine - a forum on CompuServe designed to provide access to
Sybase technical knowledge and the experience of other Sybase customers .

The Open Solutions Program

Sybase views its Open Solutions partners as playing an integral role in
bringing total client/server solutions to its customers. In 1993, the
company significantly expanded its Open Solutions Program to include new,
dedicated resources in technical, sales, and marketing areas. This year,
Sybase has added a variety of programs to support its focus on helping
partners deliver products to market quickly. The Open Solutions Program is
built upon a solid foundation of third-party relationships. It was founded
in 1989 with independent software vendors (ISVs)-typically tools vendors
who develop SYBASE compatible software but do not resell SYBASE products.
In 1990, the program expanded to include value-added resellers
(VARs)--typically application developers who embed SYBASE software in
applications and resell these solutions to end users. In 1993, a systems
integrator program was added; Sybase systems integrators typically resell
SYBASE, adding value in network consulting, custom software development,
and hardware integration and support. Currently, there are approximately
1500 Open Solutions partners participating in the program worldwide.
