Open Environment Corporation and Greenbrier & Russel Software announce
RPCpainter for creating client/server applications

Allows developers to build applications in distributed computing
environments using three-tier architecture

BOSTON, Mass., August 1, 1994 -- Open Environment Corporation (OEC) and
Greenbrier & Russell Software today announced RPCpainter a new integration
framework linking Powersoft Corporation's PowerBuilder with OEC's
three-tiered development tools. RPCpainter will enable PowerBuilder
developers to create enterprise-wide, client/server applications in a
distributed computing environment using a three-tier architecture.

RPCpainter -- marketed and supported by Chicago-based Greenbrier & Russell
-- provides a seamless interface between PowerBuilder and the OEC Toolkit.
It enables companies to develop three-tiered applications with the same
level of simplicity and transparency used to develop two-tiered
applications today.

"We are excited about partnering with OEC and believe our RPCpainter
solution will provide PowerBuilder developers with a smooth migration path
to open distributed computing, DCE, CORBA and beyond, leveraging their
existing PowerBuilder skills. This is essential to users who need to build
flexible, scalable applications," said Eric Wasowicz, president,
Greenbrier & Russel.

OEC was the first company to develop products around a three-tiered,
client/server architecture, an approach now being rapidly adopted by major
players like Microsoft, IBM and Digital. OEC's Toolkit is a suite of
development tools and runtime libraries that facilitate the use of the
Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), the open systems standard
developed by the Open Software Foundation (OSF). The tools can also be
used with TCP/IP networks.

"By bringing these two products together, Greenbrier & Russel is providing
a valuable single-source solution to Powersoft customers. RPCpainter
brings OEC's distributed development environment to the desktop, utilizing
PowerBuilder's ORCA interface for seamless integration with the
PowerBuilder development environment," said Nathan Morton, president and
CEO or OEC.

Powersoft's PowerBuilder is a professional client/server development tool
that supports centralized management and broad connectivity to front-end
design tools and enterprise-wide, back-end data servers.

RPCpainter explained

The three-tiered architecture overcomes the scalability problems of
traditional two-tiered client/server environments by using standard Remote
Procedure Call (RPC) technology. This allows business logic to be
implemented in server procedures using widely known languages (such as
COBOL, C and C++). By freeing applications from just SQL, companies can
leverage their existing programming talent and pre-existing code modules,
all while running on separate hardware platforms.

By partitioning business logic from both the Windows GUI front-end and
relational database back-end, the three-tiered architecture is able to
exploit the capabilities of high-performance servers programmed in a
compiled native language.

RPCpainter functions include:

* a graphical tool for preparing and editing remote procedure
  interface definitions
* automatic generation of RPC stubs for the server
* automatic generation of RPC objects in a PowerBuilder Library
  for the client
* automatic population of DataWindows with RPC results
* automatic upload of DataWindow changes through RPCs
