Raima Launches Velocis
A new generation of database technology for software companies

Combines SQL, Objects, and C/C++ extensions -- portable to eight platforms

San Jose, CA -- March 15, 1994 -- Raima Corporation, the leading embedded
database company for application software, announced at the SD '94 Trade
Show a new generation of high technology for professional software
developers. The product, called Velocis, is an embedded database engine
that "links" directly with an application program, and enables developers
to deploy software products that scale from a small standalone machine to
a large client/server network, all from a single code line. Velocis
supports ANSI SQL and Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SQL
interface for interoperability with most popular software development and
report writing products. Velocis is shipping this week on NetWare, Windows
NT, OS/2 2.1, and AIX and will be available on Windows, SCO, Solaris, and
HP-UX in Q2 1994.

Millions of SQL Rows on Windows, NetWare, and Windows NT

During the trade show, Raima is demonstrating the power and flexibility of
Velocis by running versions of a million-row SQL database application on a
Windows standalone system, a Novell NetWare client/server network, and on
Windows NT. The application, which is written in C++, combines "White
Pages" phone numbers and addresses with local maps of where people live
and has query response times consistently under one second on all
platforms. "The performance of this application shows how the new
generation of database technology - combining SQL, objects, and C and C++
language extensions - will let programmers build products they could not
build with '70's and '80's technology," said David Morse, Director of
Marketing at Raima. "A lot of software companies are planning to speed on
the Information Superhighway, but they need a new kind of engine to do
it."

Client/Server Design with a Small Footprint

Velocis achieves this performance and portability through a modular design,
including modules that link to an application, modules that manage
communication across a network, and a multi-threaded data engine module
with a small memory footprint. Developers can deploy all of the modules on
a single computer - as small as a 386 with 4 MB of memory - or across a
network with hundreds of concurrent users, without changing application
code. Developers can use SQL, C or C++, and Raima's record-at-a-time "d_"
API to write their own "Extension Modules" to access the engine at a very
fast, efficient level. Extension Modules can be used to write custom
interfaces to the engine or to get around network performance bottlenecks.
Velocis supports ANSI SQL and has most of the features found in SQL
databases - including transaction protection, row-level locking, and
stored procedures - and many of the features found in object-oriented
databases - including object persistence and inheritance (through the
Raima Object Manager API to Velocis.)

"Software companies are being forced to market to the desktop, to market to
the network, to integrate standards and new data types like multimedia,
and to reduce their product maintenance costs," said Morse. "A gap has
grown between these requirements and the database tools needed to solve
them, because most of the big database companies are focused on the
non-technical end user. Velocis fills this gap by delivering what
professional developers need today in a database engine."

Aggressive Pricing Model

Velocis is priced below most of its competitors and has an entry price of
$595 for a Windows development system. Multi-user pricing starts at
$1,995. Software companies that decide to "embed" Velocis in Their
products have the option of paying Raima a distribution royalty based on a
percent of their product's list price.
