Startup Company eVAULT Offers Remote Backup Service

Cupertino, Calif. - September 12, 1994 - eVAULT, a startup company in the
Silicon Valley, has announced the inception of a unique new service for
small to large businesses. The service, called Remote Backup (patent
pending), allows users to quickly, inexpensively, and automatically
transfer critical computer files to an off-site location over the phone
lines. This means that businesses no longer need to fear the loss of their
computer data due to fire, earthquake, flood, theft, hardware failure, or
any other catastrophe that could put a business out of business.

eVAULT operates an offsite storage facility for the user's data. At the
facility, an account is maintained for each user. Each account is
protected by a password known only to the user and to the eVAULT system
operator. The eVAULT system is set up so that each user can only back up
files to his or her own account. Transfers of data are allowed in one
direction only - from user to eVAULT. This insures that unauthorized
people cannot gain access to files.

To automate and simplify the remote backup process, the engineering team at
eVAULT has developed eBACK remote backup software and eTIMER remote backup
scheduling software. eBACK allows users to list their critical files. When
activated, eBACK determines which files have been modified since the last
backup, compresses them, encrypts them for security, dials up the eVAULT,
and transfers them for permanent safe-keeping. The encryption key is known
only to the user to further safeguard against illegal access to important
proprietary data.

eTIMER remote backup scheduling software allows users to back up data at
set times without intervention. This makes backup as simple as possible.
It also removes the single greatest obstacle to backing up data - simply
forgetting to do it. eTIMER is a program that sits in the computer's
memory doing nothing until it is time for a scheduled backup. At that
time, it interrupts the computer, performs a remote backup, then puts the
computer back exactly the way it was before the backup. Any operations
that were in progress before the backup continue where they left off. All
this is done without any interaction from the user.

About eVAULT

eVAULT is an outgrowth of Zeidman Consulting, a highly regarded consulting
firm in the Silicon Valley. Zeidman Consulting was formed in 1987 and
specializes in all forms of hardware and software design for large and
small clients throughout the world. Some of the customers include Alcatel,
Ikos Systems, Quickturn Design Systems, and Ricoh Corporation. Zeidman
Consulting works in partnerships with Advanced Micro Devices, Motorola,
National Instruments, and Texas Instruments.

In 1992, Bob Zeidman, president of Zeidman Consulting, began to realize the
need to store important data off-site. The loss of a single computer
design could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to the company and
potentially put it out of business. This was particularly apparent after
the San Francisco earthquake of 1989 and the Oakland Hills fire of 1991.
Mr. Zeidman began searching for convenient, inexpensive methods of
off-site backup. There were none. Mr. Zeidman then set out to develop his
own method of off-site backup, which he called Remote Backup. Mr. Zeidman
is the president of eVAULT.

eVAULT Remote Backup service can be accessed by anyone with a computer and
a modem. Users must first register with eVAULT so that an account can be
opened for them. eBACK and eTIMER software which automates and simplifies
the backup procedure is currently available for DOS and WINDOWS machines.
A version for the Apple MacIntosh is in development.
