SYBASE TO SUPPORT U.S. MILITARY TRAINING IN SOUTH KOREA

Multimedia Tool Gain Momentum Used in South Korea

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 22, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that its multimedia application
development tool Gain Momentum will be used in support of joint training
exercises between the United States and South Korean forces, which are
scheduled to begin in South Korea today. Workstations running a Gain
Momentum-based application called Theater Support Operations Cell/Space
Products Information Terminal (TSOC/SPIT) are located in South Korea and
will be used by officers from the U.S. Space Command. The U.S. Space
Command is a critical component in the success of these exercises,
supporting ground movements with information gathered from strategically
located satellites. In addition, Gain Momentum will provide a link to the
U.S. Space Command headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO.

Noel Leca, vice president of multimedia products at Sybase, commented, "We
are proud that the U.S. Space Command has selected Gain Momentum to
support the training exercises in South Korea, which play such a crucial
role in our country's foreign policy. This is also an excellent example of
a mission-critical application which can be effectively created with Gain
Momentum," Leca said. "Officers will take advantage of the high degree of
interactivity and the advanced multimedia capabilities provided by Gain
Momentum to make key decisions throughout the exercises."

TSOC/SPIT will primarily be used by U.S. Space Command Liaison Officers who
are deployed in South Korea to support air, land, and naval commands
during the exercises. U.S. and allied forces will integrate space assets
such as information gathered from satellites, including weather
information and geographical information to determine and support troop
movement decisions. Liaison officers use Gain Momentum to help other
officers take advantage of space assets to ensure that the exercises will
be completed successfully.

Lieutenant Colonel Monty Anderson, who heads the Space Command development
effort of TSOC/SPIT, said, "Making Space Command information available to
other commands is a crucial factor in these exercises. Our goal is to
provide an easy-to-use multimedia environment that can effectively provide
space support for decisions made on the ground."

Gain applications will provide support in five major areas: development of
operation plans, identification of space support requirements, war gaming
and exercise support, professional military education, and joint training
activities. In addition, Gain Momentum integrates other applications into
a single, multimedia environment, providing officers with an integrated
view of all information available to them.

Why Gain Momentum

Systems integrator General Research Corporation (GRC) developed TSOC/SPIT
for the Space Command under the direction of Ray Etter, project leader at
GRC. "We chose the Gain Momentum tool because it is the only product
available today which combines a rapid prototyping environment, powerful
multimedia capabilities, and integration with information from a wide
variety of relational and non-relational database products, said Etter.
"Since we have started to use Gain Momentum, the productivity of our
application developers has increased significantly, which is making a
positive impact on our bottomline."

GRC has completed the first phase of the TSOC/SPIT system but will continue
its development throughout the duration of the exercises to dynamically
respond to the information needs that facilitate the decision making
process. Gain Momentum will run on Silicon Graphics workstations and
integrate information from a relational database provided by Oracle.
