SYBASE, HP LAUNCH VERY LARGE DATABASE LAB

New Engineering Facility Targeted at Architecting and Perfecting
Terabyte-Class Databases

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 23, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, and Hewlett-Packard Company today announced they
have formed a very large database (VLDB) engineering laboratory. With
sites in Emeryville and Cupertino, CA, the lab will facilitate the
integration of the UNIX system-based HP 9000 Series 800 business servers
with the SYBASE SQL Server to create hardware/software environments
capable of handling terabyte-class databases.

The lab is jointly staffed by dedicated Sybase and HP engineers and uses
customer applications and data as the basis for its database research and
integration testing. Specifically, the lab is chartered with addressing
database performance, backup, information loading, and systems management
for terabyte-sized databases.

"This latest engineering effort builds on the long-standing and highly
successful relationship between HP and Sybase," said Carol G. Mills,
general manager of HP's General Systems Division. "As companies continue
to implement large-scale transaction-processing and decision-support
systems, database performance becomes critical. By working closely with
Sybase to create an optimized VLDB solution, we're providing customers
with a best-of-class environment that will meet their needs both now and
well into the future."

"As users migrate more and more mission-critical data to client/server
systems, we expect to offer our customers the opportunity to build new
value streams from this mass of information," said Mark Hoffman, president
and CEO of Sybase. "Sybase and HP are taking a leadership role to address
expanding customer requirements in client/server computing."

Sybase and HP VLDB Lab

Sybase's Emeryville VLDB lab facility will focus on tuning the performance
of the SYBASE SQL Server relational database management system (RDBMS) on
HP systems for very large amounts of data. To support this effort, Sybase
has outfitted its laboratory with a Precision Architecture reduced
instruction set computing-based HP 9000 Model T500 symmetric
multiprocessing (SMP) system. The HP system has increased disk capacity to
support performance tuning of the SQL Server to scale to large numbers of
CPUs and for the very high numbers of users often accompanying large
databases in commercial environments.

In addition, another fully configured 12-CPU Model T500 system with very
large disk space will be used in developing future releases of SYBASE SQL
Server targeted at customers who wish to build, manage, and backup
terabyte-class databases.

HP's Cupertino VLDB lab facility, which is outfitted with a 12-CPU Model
T500 machine with multiple tape drives, will be used for tuning and
benchmarking tape drive parallelism for large-scale database backup
operations. The machine will use SYBASE SQL Server 10 with Backup Server.
To date, backup speeds in excess of 20 gigabytes per hour have been
achieved, and higher performance is expected.

"Today the marketplace talks in terms of hundreds of gigabytes of data;
next year it will be terabytes of data," said Dr. Sadie Decker, vice
president of advanced information technology for Tele-Communications, Inc.
"Here at TCI, we think the future will bring an increased need to load,
backup, and run queries against terabyte-size databases. This VLDB lab is
proof of Sybase and HP's continued commitment to solving our evolving VLDB
needs."

The Sybase and HP Relationship

The formation of the Sybase/HP VLDB lab is the latest in a cooperative
relationship that has existed between Sybase and HP since 1987. During
this period, the two companies have entered a number of joint engineering,
marketing, and sales efforts around Sybase's core product set, including
the SQL Server product running on the HP 9000 family of business systems
and servers.

In addition, the companies have focused joint engineering efforts on
providing products optimized for the HP 9000, including recently announced
support for Novell's IPX/SPX communications protocol and the optimization
of SQL Server on HP's SMP systems.

Hewlett-Packard Company

Hewlett-Packard Company is an international manufacturer of measurement and
computation products and systems recognized for excellence in quality and
support. The company's products and services are used in industry,
business, engineering, science, medicine and education in approximately
110 countries. HP has 97,900 employees and had revenue of $20.3 billion in
its 1993 fiscal year.

Sybase, Inc.

Sybase, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYBS) is one of the fastest growing suppliers of
client/server-based software products and services for on-line
