SYBASE ANNOUNCES NEW, INTUITIVE WINDOWS VERSIONS OF DEPARTMENTAL DATABASE
ADMINISTRATION PRODUCTS

SQL Server Manager and SQL Server Monitor Facilitate Simple "Drag and Drop"
Operations and Performance Monitoring for Local and Remote Database
Administration

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 15,1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced new versions of two of its leading
tools for centralized local or remote database administration, the SQL
Server Manager database administration tool and the SQL Server Monitor
performance monitoring tool.

SQL Server Manager, formerly SA Companion, adds significant new features
including a Windows graphical user interface, intuitive database component
icons and easy to use "drag and drop" operations. SQL Server Monitor,
formerly SYBASE SQL Monitor, features: object-level data access; the
capability to record and play back historical data; and an open
application programming interface (API) for 3rd party access. SQL Server
Manager is currently scheduled to be generally available in Q4, 1994, SQL
Server Monitor is currently scheduled for general availability in early
1995.

Each of these products is optimized for centralized, one-screen
administration of local or remote database servers on a site-by-site
basis. Together they offer the industry's most complete offering for
departmental database administration. These products are complemented by
Sybase's new Enterprise SQL Server Manager, the first enterprise-level
database administration product optimized for one-screen control of
unlimited numbers of distributed database servers.

"Sybase recognizes that departmental and enterprise environments have very
different database administration needs," said Berl Hartman, Sybase vice
president of strategic marketing. "We are pleased to offer scalable
database administration solutions tailored to the specific requirements of
our customers, whether they are administering one site or many worldwide,
and an upgrade path for those making the transition."

Identifying solutions that can grow with its rapidly expanding organization
is critical for Sybase customer, Epoch, Inc. Epoch is a subsidiary of
billion-dollar parent company, EMC Corp., and sells client/server storage
management software.

Epoch vice president of information systems, Richard Dale, said, "From an
architectural standpoint, Sybase is heading in the right direction with
Enterprise SQL Server Manager. I am currently bringing in their
departmental solutions, SQL Server Manager and SQL Server Monitor to
supplement my in-house systems management solutions. As an IS manager in a
shop that will grow, I'm confident that I can grow with Sybase. It is
imperative to have a stable, available infrastructure, and this Sybase
product, based on the Tivoli framework, goes a long way in meeting these
needs."

SQL Server Manager

SQL Server Manager software enables centralized database administration for
local and remote Sybase SQL Server databases. Users can set up and
reconfigure servers; add or delete databases, users, objects and devices;
and enable or disable disk mirroring from one screen. New features include
an Microsoft Windows-based graphical user interface, intuitive icons
representing key SQL Server components and "drag-and-drop" functionality.
The benefits of these features to database administrators include:

Simplified administration

- manage total environment - users, databases and devices -
  from one screen;
- use Microsoft Windows based graphical point-and-click
  interface;
- customize displays for maximum productivity;
- easily administer servers with drag and drop functionality.

Reduced system and administration costs

- fewer administrators, due to central control;
- minimize costly complex syntax errors with easy-to-use GUI;
- reduce learning curve with intuitive icons representing key
  DBA functions.

SQL Server Manager Pricing and Availability

Sybase is currently shipping SQL Server Manager as SA Companion on UNIX
platforms. SQL Server Manager on Microsoft-Windows is currently scheduled
to be generally available in Q4 1994. Existing SA Companion customers will
receive SQL Server Manager as a regular maintenance upgrade. Pricing for
new customers will range from $375 to $13,750 per managed SQL Server,
according to hardware platform and number of users supported. SQL Server
Manager for Windows is a client product and will manage any server running
on SQL Server 10.

The cost of SQL Server Manager can be applied to a future upgrade toward
Sybase's Enterprise SQL Server Manager product also announced today.

SQL Server Monitor

SQL Server Monitor is a comprehensive, easy-to-use graphical tool that
helps systems administrators isolate problems with all SQL Server systems
within one site and fine-tune them for optimal performance. It delivers
significantly more accurate and detailed information than the data
provided by other RDBMS vendors' tools currently on the market. The new
version also includes: a feature for recording and playing back historical
monitoring data; data access at a new, object-level of granularity; and an
open API to allow easy third party vendor access. User benefits include:

** Historical recording for tracking performance trends. SQL Server Monitor
records statistics of the system as they are logged to enable users to
play back and analyze trends such as peak usage, or how a system was used
over a period of time for better diagnosis of problems.

** SQL Server object-level data access for more effective troubleshooting.
DBAs can now access data relative to the activity of SQL Server objects
(ie: stored procedures, tables, views). For example, one could monitor how
often a table is accessed.

** Open API for Third-Party Access. SQL Server Monitor includes an API to
enable third-party tools providers to access and leverage its data and
functionality. For example, Sybase expects leading systems and network
management vendors to complement their products by using this API to
include Sybase performance information in their integrated environments.

SQL Server Monitor Pricing and Availability

SQL Server Monitor is currently shipping as SYBASE SQL Monitor. SQL Server
Monitor is currently scheduled to be generally available in early 1995.
SQL Server Monitor has both a client and a server piece. The SQL Server
Monitor client runs on Windows, and the SQL Server Monitor server will run
on any system running SQL Server 10. Existing SYBASE SQL Monitor customers
will receive SQL Server Monitor as a regular maintenance upgrade. Pricing
for new customers will range from $4,460 to $10,520 per managed SQL
Server, according to platform.
