SYBASE ANNOUNCES FIRST SCALABLE DATABASE ADMINISTRATION SOLUTION FOR
DISTRIBUTED CLIENT/SERVER ENVIRONMENTS

Enterprise SQL Server Manager Substantially Cuts Time and Cost of Database
Administration for hundreds of Distributed Database Servers

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 15, 1994 -- Sybase, The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced Enterprise SQL Server Manager, a product for
seamlessly administering up to hundreds of distributed servers across an
enterprise. Enterprise SQL Server Manager is the industry's first database
administration product optimized for one-screen control of unlimited
numbers of distributed database servers. Based on the Tivoli TME
Architecture systems management standard, it can also be easily integrated
with third-party systems management tools for quicker resolution of system
problems. Enterprise SQL Server Manager is now in Alpha and is currently
scheduled to be generally available in early 1995.

A recent Meta Group report cited systems management as a major obstacle to
effectively deploying client/server today, contributing up to 33% of
overall systems lifecycle costs. Database administration--just one piece
of the systems management puzzle for customers deploying client/server
applications--includes functions such as server set-up, server control
(such as start and stop), performance monitoring and user access
administration. Sybase has been a leader in providing departmental-level
database administration tools since 1990 to address these types of issues.
Yet, as companies deploy client/server applications across distributed
servers throughout their organizations, the redundancy of administering
each local set of servers separately dramatically increases their database
administration time, cost, and complexity.

"We believe Enterprise SQL Server Manager is a breakthrough product in the
area of database administration," said Berl Hartman, Sybase vice president
of strategic marketing. "It enables database administrators to perform any
of these tasks once for the entire enterprise database system, by simply
dragging and dropping icons. For today's DBA, who has to manually
configure each database server in the organization, the time, cost and
consistency benefits are substantial. This, combined with the ability to
integrate-not just connect-Enterprise SQL Server Manager with third-party
systems management solutions, gives us a truly unique product for the
marketplace."

Enterprise SQL Server Manager

Enterprise SQL Server Manager, which has been in development for the past
two years, is Sybase's object-based product for the administration of
large numbers of geographically-dispersed SYBASE SQL Server databases on
heterogeneous platforms. The product allows administrators, responsible
for tens to hundreds of distributed servers to: configure their servers;
monitor server status and performance; start and stop servers; manage
server space utilization and security; manage database objects (such as
tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers) and schedule and
perform backup and recovery operations.

Sybase applied its technical expertise in database administration to build
upon and extend the standard Tivoli TME Architecture and to enable
unprecedented distributed database administration functionality. TME
Architecture is an object-oriented framework that provides a set of common
services necessary to develop scalable, robust, and open management
applications. For this product, Sybase created SQL Server component
objects, defined database specific events, introduced a message filtering
facility, applied "best practices" policy defaults, and created a new
database server management API. The result is the industry's only
currently announced enterprise-level database administration product
optimized for one screen control of unlimited numbers of distributed
database servers.

Scalability: Do It Once For The Entire Enterprise

In database administration, redundant task execution becomes, not only a
challenge, but also an expensive resource burden. Current database
administration solutions can manage multiple servers from a central
location, but only one server at a time. Enterprise SQL Server Manager
provides intuitive icons for all SYBASE SQL Server components, which look
and act the same regardless of location or hardware platform where they
actually reside. The database administrator can access these icons and
apply actions to as many servers in as many locations as needed, with a
simple drag and drop motion. Key scalability features include:

* Collections: ability to apply changes to groups of servers
in one step eliminating redundant efforts and inconsistencies.
* Message filtering: centrally view and filter server messages
to make it easier to find problems.
* Policies: build your organization's rules into the software
as defaults to ensure administrative consistency.
* Task automation/Scheduling: SQL Server specific events trigger
predefined actions such e-mail, beeper calls and pop-up window
  notification so administrators are alerted only when needed;
software can also be scheduled to execute expected tasks such
  as back-up automatically .
* Easy migration path: The Enterprise SQL Server Manager GUI
is consistent with the interface of Sybase's SQL Server
Manager departmental-level administration tool, also announced
today. This makes it easy for customers as they grow from
  departmental to enterprise client/server implementations.

Customer Comments on DBA Scalability Issues

Enterprise SQL Server Manager alpha site, Swiss Bank Corporation, one of
the largest foreign banks in the U.S. with over 23,000 employees
worldwide, has standardized on the SYBASE SQL Server product as the bank
has grown to its current use of 150 plus servers. Roger Jungst, Associate
Director of IT in Swiss Bank Corporation's International Finance Division,
says administering 150 geographically dispersed database servers is a
hard, time-consuming, and potentially error-prone task.

"Right now we have to configure remote servers manually, one at a time,"
said Jungst. "If we need 'server A' to look and act just like 'server B'
just doing one configuration task manually across multiple distributed
servers, site by site, not only uses a lot of resources, but runs the risk
of inconsistencies between the servers. With Enterprise SQL Server
Manager, we'd like to be able to treat database administration like a
logical server: if we have 10 servers or 100, we'd like to treat them like
one. Now, that will be wonderful."

Integration: Coordinating Management Activities with a Single Management
Environment

One problem in systems management is that the tools available today to
manage the various layers of software, from applications and operating
systems to networks and databases, do not themselves necessarily
cooperate. Database administration tools currently on the market may at
best offer open application programming interfaces (APIs) enabling other
tools to "talk" to them. By contrast, Sybase offers tool integration at
two different levels to foster the most appropriate level of integration
with "best-of-class" third-party systems management tools as well as with
a customer's in-house solutions.

"With Enterprise SQL Server Manager, our users will get a single view of
their systems management functionality," commented John Mandile, Sybase
vice president of systems management products. "Our goal is to leverage
our partners products to help DBAs administer their databases along with
their systems as seamlessly as possible." Integration features include:

* Simple communication: administration applications communicate via SNMP or
new Server Management APIs.

* Full integration: administration applications share services and
coordinate operations via the shared Tivoli TME Architecture. For example,
systems administrators could conceivably add user information to both the
operating system and database at once if these management products were
integrated at the architecture level.

Through Sybase's Open Solutions Program, a number of leading systems
management vendors are already working with Sybase to ensure integration
for their customers. These partners and their products include:

Sybase in Systems Management

Systems management is one of Sybase's four key areas of product focus which
also include: RDBMS servers, interoperability and software application
development tools. Sybase has been offering systems management products
since 1990 with its initial release of SQL Server Manager (then called SA
Companion). Other systems management products include: SQL Server Monitor
for monitoring performance, Backup Server for on-line backups, Audit
Server for enhanced security environments, Replication Server Manager for
replication management, and Gateway Managers for heterogeneous data
access.

Tivoli TME Architecture

The Tivoli TME Architecture provides a set of common services across
distributed computers, enabling Tivoli, its customers and independent
software developers to build interoperable systems management
applications. TME Architecture provides the basis for Tivoli's complete
systems management solution, which includes a suite of management,
applications that range from user administration, print management and
software distribution to event management, job scheduling, security, and
data backup. TME Architecture's core technology is an object request
broker (ORB) that conforms with the Object Management Group's CORBA 1.1
specification. In addition, X/Open has selected parts of Tivoli's
architecture as an initial working draft for its management services
application programming interface.

Sybase, Inc.
