FREE SERVICE OFFERED BY SPECTRUM ONLINE

LOS ANGELES - The latest addition to the Information Super- highway was
unveiled this week. Spectrum Online announced it is now offering a
variety of popular interactive services that can be accessed - free of
charge - by anyone with a touch tone tele- phone.

Callers can listen to voice personals from around the world, debate current
events in simulated Talk Radio discussion forums, and post messages on
dozens of interactive voice bulletin boards. Other offerings include daily
trivia challenges, contests, and touch tone adaptations of classic games
such as Blackjack.

According to Spectrum Online director Richard De A'Morelli, the new service
is modeled after the popular modem BBS's that make up the Internet, except
that callers don't need a computer to use this service. Anyone with a
touch tone telephone can now travel on the global Information Highway, he
explained.

De A'Morelli is a pioneer at developing innovative things to do with a
touch tone phone. He created one of the first in- teractive dating
programs in the 1980's, and he has designed award-winning educational
programs such as "Touch Tone Classroom," which allows students and parents
to retrieve homework, grades, and attendance records 24 hours a day.
Students can also use their telephone to participate in online class
discussions, listen to recorded lectures, correct homework assignments,
and take quizzes and examinations.

Right now, network developers are fine-tuning services with commercial
appeal such as the voice personals, but a wide range of educational
services are in the works.

"We are developing learning programs for homebound young- sters, an ESL
(English As A Second Language) course, and many other programs, but
funding is a problem," De A'Morelli said.

The software that drives the system has been in development for six years,
starting out as a modest one-line system with a handful of subscribers.
Development costs have soared to $75,000 and most of the money has come
from De A'Morelli's own pocket.

FREE SERVICES ANNOUNCED

In a dramatic break from the pay-per-call industry, Spectrum Online
announced that its services will be offered free of charge to the public.
Callers must provide names and addresses for validation purposes and
receive a free voice mailbox and 30 minutes of free connect time per
month.

Those desiring more time can subscribe. For $9.95 a month, subscribers
receive two hours of connect time and extended privi- leges. Additional
time costs just five cents a minute.

De A'Morelli acknowledged this innovative public service network could send
shock waves through the pay-per-call industry which typically charges up
to $3.99 per minute for comparable services. Last year, Americans spent
$700 million on dating lines and other pay-per-call offerings.

The system is currently logging more than 3,000 calls a day. Those who wish
to apply for a free account can reach Spectrum On- line 24 hours at (818)
834-8255.
