Microsoft to Boost Internet Presence by 3,000 Percent

Increased Capacity Will Allow up to 2 Million Users per Month to Access
Microsoft Software Updates, Customer Support Information and Product
Information From Windows NT-Based Internet Server

REDMOND, Wash. Aug. 8, 1994 Microsoft Corporation announced today that
nearly 2 million customers have accessed the company's Internet FTP server
during the first year of operation, making it one of the most popular of
the more than 2 million computer systems on the Internet. In response to
this tremendous demand, Microsoft will enhance its Internet presence by
adding support for the popular Gopher and World Wide Web protocols, making
it easier for the Internet community to navigate key Microsoft
information, and will increase capacity this summer by 3,000 percent,
which will enable up to 2 million users to access the servers each month.
Customers are accessing the Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server server
operating system to obtain around-the-clock product support information,
software updates and product technical and financial information.

To improve user access to Microsoft's Internet servers, communication
lines, now operating at T1 levels of 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps), will
be upgraded to T3 rates of 45 Mbps. Microsoft is one of the only
companies that currently support or have announced T3 access to its
Internet servers.

"This is a noteworthy event for the commercial use of Internet," said Eric
Hood, CEO of NorthWestNet, a longtime provider of the Internet services to
Microsoft. "Once again, Microsoft is leading the way in the development
and use of new technologies by being the first commercial site in the
world to provide critical business services at such high-access capacity
to the broad Internet community."

"We are committed to empowering our customers by providing them enhanced
information services as part of the Microsoft Support Network Information
Service offerings," said John Martin, manager of global information
services at Microsoft. "Expansion of our Internet-based information
services demonstrates our belief in the extraordinary benefits the
information highway can bring to personal and business users. Users can
access comprehensive, cutting-edge information that provides them with
immediate answers to product questions, as well as key software updates,
without waiting for conventional distribution methods."

To provide this service, Microsoft uses servers running Microsoft Windows
NT Advanced Server version 3.1. These servers will be upgraded to run
"Daytona," the next version of Windows NT Advanced Server, when it's
available this summer. Windows NT Advanced Server provides the power and
reliability needed for 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, mission-critical
corporate computing. Because it's an open system, companies using
Windows NT Advanced Server to provide Internet access can be assured the
broadest range of users, platforms and client applications are able to
access their servers.

The Microsoft Internet server began operation in June 1993. It gives
customers full access to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, a database with
thousands of case-study examples, tips, updates and related articles about
Microsoft products. The Knowledge Base is assembled and used by Microsoft
Product Support Services personnel and is also used by help desk
professionals worldwide. The server also makes available selected beta
releases and product updates, including the Client Service for NetWare and
the Microsoft TCP/IP-32 for Windows for Workgroups operating system beta.

The Microsoft Internet server, at ftp.microsoft.com, is accessible without
charge from Microsoft to all of the estimated 20 million users with an
Internet account and access to TCP/IP and FTP client software. The server
uses the TCP/IP and FTP protocol support integrated into Windows NT
Advanced Server.
