ALADDIN'S INSTALLERMAKER IS AVAILABLE

Watsonville, CA (July 12, 1993) -- Aladdin Systems today began shipping its
new installer program, StuffIt InstallerMaker, an easy-to-use, turnkey
system that allows software developers and product managers to easily
create custom installers for their products. What sets StuffIt
InstallerMaker apart from other installer programs is that it's based on a
point and click interface. InstallerMaker is available through licensing
agreements with Aladdin Systems.

Prior to the availability of Aladdin's StuffIt InstallerMaker, developers
who required powerful installation capabilities were forced to create
installer scripts for Apple's installer. While powerful, Apple's installer
requires that the developer have a great deal of programming experience,
including knowing how to write MPW Rez scripts.

Using StuffIt InstallerMaker, developers can simply choose from a number of
pre-defined destinations for each file to be installed. Developers can
also determine what files will be installed based on the configuration of
the end user's computer. In addition, StuffIt InstallerMaker allows the
developer to compress all the files being installed, thereby reducing the
number of distribution disks and providing the end user with one-button
installation. With StuffIt InstallerMaker, compression was designed as an
integral part from the beginning, not as an afterthought as in other
installation products.

MPW and ResEdit are NOT required to create powerful installation programs
using StuffIt InstallerMaker. However, Aladdin does provide the ability
for developers to further customize installers by adding their own custom
code during startup, installation, and at the end of installation. Because
of the built-in features, most developers will find that they will not
need to write any custom code or use ResEdit.

A SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT FEATURES AND BENEFITS FOR DEVELOPERS:

INTEGRATED COMPRESSION -- Allows developers to ship their products on fewer
disks, thus saving money.

COMBINE FILES INTO A SINGLE INTEGRATED INSTALLER APPLICATION -- All the
files in a product can also be uploaded as a single file for distribution
of online updates. Since the file is compressed, it will take less time
for end users to download.

DESTINATION SUPPORT -- Developers can easily choose where the installer
should place any file in the product. For example, the System Folder,
Control Panels folder or any predesignated folder.

CONDITION SUPPORT -- Developers can place simple "IF...THEN" rules on any
file in the product. For example, a developer can state: "Only install
this file if running on a 68000 machine without Color QuickDraw."

STARTUP SPLASH SCREEN AND TEXT -- Developers can paste their own images
into their installer to give the installer the same look as their program.
They can also have "licensing" or "Read-Me" text displayed for the end
user before the user installs the software.

STANDARD AND CUSTOM INSTALL -- Developers can give their end users a choice
of what to install. For instance, the end user can be given the option to
install an application, but not its help file.

"SUPER-CHECKSUMS" -- The files that are installed have checksums so that
bad media and duplication errors are caught when the end user tries to
install from a defective disk, thus eliminating end user problems at a
later time due to bad data.

A SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT FEATURES AND BENEFITS FOR THE END USER:

CORRECT INSTALLATION -- The user does not have to manually drag files to
their correct location. The installer will place all files as the
developer specified thus eliminating any error due to improper
installation. In addition, since all files have been checksummed, there is
no chance of installing a corrupted file due to bad floppy disks or a bad
download.

END USERS GET ONLY THE FILES THAT ARE CORRECT FOR THEIR SPECIFIC
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION -- Since the developer can specify which
files should be installed based on the end user's machine, there is no
need for the end user to throw away unusable files (for example, color
art, if they have a monochrome machine).

END USERS CAN BE GIVEN A CHOICE OF GROUPS OF FILES TO INSTALL -- They do
not need to install everything -- unless the developer requires that
everything be installed. Most developers will give the user the choice of
not installing groups of files, such as "Read Me" files, "Help" files,
etc.
