Discis to publish new Robert Munsch title

"A Promise is a Promise" co-authored with Michael Kusugak

Toronto, Ontario (August 15, 1994) Discis Knowledge Research will publish a
new title co-writen by bestselling children's author Robert Munsch and
Inuit writer Michael Kusugak. The story, A Promise Is a Promise,
integrates northern culture and legends in a story about appreciating
family values. The multimedia CD-ROM book works with both IBM PCs and
compatibles (MPC Level 1) and Macintosh computers and will be affordably
priced with a MSRP of $29.95.

Robert Munsch is the author of more than 20 children's books which have
sold over 15 million copies. Trained in Early Childhood Education and
formerly a Professor of Family Studies, he was recently voted the Number
One Children's Author by the New York Times. Discis already publishes
three other Munsch titles (Mud Puddle, The Paper Bag Princess and Thomas'
Snowsuit) which are among the company's best selling books. Munsch --
known for dramatic readings of his work-- is one of two narrators of the
story on the Discis CD-ROM version.

A Promise is a Promise is the first book by Michael Kusugak, who met Munsch
during a one week stay by the author in Kusugak's tiny northern community
of Rankin Inlet, Northwest Territories. Munsch encouraged Kusugak to tell
the stories of the Inuit, which led to their collaboration on A Promise is
a Promise. The book deals with a young Inuit girl's promise to her mother
and her plan to outwit the Quallupilluit -- a creature that lives below
the sea ice.

Discis will also publish another book by Kusugak, the award-winning
Northern Lights The Soccer Trails, which shows how a young Inuit girl
comes to grips with a tragedy in her family. The title comes from an Inuit
belief that the Northern Lights are all the souls of people who lived
before, playing soccer in the sky.

Says Discis CEO and co-founder John Lowry, "both books deal with universal
values and the importance of family. That they do this by integrating
another culture -- the Inuit -- makes them doubly interesting and
educational for young readers."

A Promise Is a Promise and Northern Lights share the many features of
Discis' award-winning product design, including presentation of the
original text with colorful illustrations, dramatic narration, music and
sound effects. Combining the power of an entertaining story teller with a
patient reading tutor, the books also allows children to build their
skills by "clicking" with the computer mouse to obtain pronunciation,
in-context explanations, syllables, parts of speech and optional Spanish
translations for every word of the text. Similar information is available
by clicking on objects within illustrations. Selected words can then be
saved in a recall list which can be viewed on screen or printed for later
review. Many features, including the reading speed, can be customized to
suit the needs of individual readers.

They are also available in a special Classroom Edition, which includes
extensive teacher resource materials (an integrated Activity Guide,
Curriculum Story Web, and a series of reproducible Black-Line Masters for
class activities, student evaluation and recognition).

Enhanced Features

A Promise Is a Promise and Northern Lights are up to three times longer
than many other Discis titles and more generously illustrated, with a new
picture appearing on the computer screen with virtually each new page of
text. Audio and written profiles of the authors, accompanied by a
selection of photos are also included on the CD-ROM.

A pioneer in the development of interactive multimedia books, Discis has
now published more than 40 titles and sold more than one million copies of
its educational books on CD-ROM.
