NEW PARTS LIST TRACKS IEEE 1149.1 GROWTH

Mountain View, CA, August 9, 1994 ... In a bid to help test and systems
engineers promote boundary scan test strategies within their companies,
Alpine Image Systems, Inc. (AIS) the manufacturer of boundary scan ATE
systems, has updated the 1149.1 ChampionChip List, a compilation of IEEE
1149.1 compliant parts, which is now available free on request to the
company.

AIS points to the dramatic growth of the number of vendors and products on
the list, and says this is an indication of new found acceptance of the
boundary scan test strategy by the electronics industry.

The compliant parts list is divided into three categories: Catalog ICs,
ASICs and Programmable ICs.

Other indications of the growth of 1149.1 acceptance come from Teradyne's
VICTORY Product Manager Walter Vahey who says he is surprised by the
number of requests for a demo disk of the company's VICTORY software (a
boundary scan ATPG). "We sent out more than 200 disks in a four month
period in response to individual requests," Vahey said. "We've distributed
more than 1,000 through direct sales efforts and through the companies
participating in the VICTORY program. In the past year we have added four
new partner companies".

Hewlett Packard's Dr. Ken Parker added "HP recently held The Limited Access
Video TeleConference for over 500 participants interested in 1149.1 test
techniques; 91% rated the content very useful. My book The Boundary-Scan
Handbook (Kluwer Academic Press) is now in its third printing, with
several thousand sold. Both the attendance figure and popularity of the
book point to dramatic growth in 1149.1 acceptance". HP customer Najmi
Jarwala of AT&T indicated that "over two hundred 1149.1 compliant ASICs
have been designed by AT&T for use in various products".

Two groups will find this chip list invaluable; designers of 1149.1
compliant devices, boards and systems, and test engineers trying to
convince their organizations to adopt a boundary scan test strategy. "AIS
is trying to help the people we call the 1149.1 champions, who are
promoting boundary scan test strategies in their companies. They use the
1149.1 ChampionChip List to illustrate to management that the industry
wide support for 1149.1 makes the strategy viable", said Ellis Goldberg,
AIS Director of Marketing.

The chip list makes it possible for a design engineer to quickly find parts
sources without having to dig through hundreds of manufacturers' data
sheets. The list also denotes which manufacturers have made BSDL files,
used with Automatic Test Pattern Generation Programs (ATPGs) to create
1149.1 tests, available for their devices.

Mr. Goldberg pointed out that "Test costs are reduced even on boards with
just a few compliant devices. With the growing number of 1149.1 compliant
devices, and diminished test point accessibility it makes sense for many
board manufacturers to adopt an inexpensive 1149.1 test strategy".

Manufacturers with parts to be added to list are invited to contact Mr.
Goldberg. The list will be revised as new parts become available. AIS
thanks Dan Strassberg (EDN) and Colin Maunder (BT Labs) for their numerous
additions to the AIS list.
