VIDEO PRODUCTS

Sybase and HP Cooperate on Industry Requests for Proposals to Provide
Software and Hardware for Interactive Multimedia Applications

EMERYVILLE, CA -- June 21, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that it will port its Intermedia
products to Hewlett-Packard's Interactive Video Server and set-top boxes.
The recently announced Intermedia architecture enables a new class of
interactive multimedia applications that allow companies to electronically
and interactively conduct commerce and deliver information to their
business partners, customers, and home consumers. Sybase and HP are
jointly responding to requests for proposal (RFPs) to provide potential
customers with an integrated, interactive multimedia architecture for the
mass market.

"Sybase is successfully leveraging its leadership position in enterprise
client/server systems and multimedia authoring tools to provide proven
technology to a new and exciting market," said James D. Olson, general
manager of HP's Video Communications Division. "We're gratified that they
have selected our open system design to offer more performance and choice
to our interactive customers."

The combination of SYBASE and HP products will provide a flexible and
scalable multimedia software and hardware architecture for large-scale
deployment of interactive services. Both Sybase and HP are committed to
providing a suite of open, portable products that are based on proven
hardware and software technology.

Noel Leca, general manager and vice president of multimedia products at
Sybase, commented, "HP's philosophy of providing open and scalable
solutions for the extended enterprise is in line with our view of open
software solutions that are portable across multiple platforms. We believe
this will allow our customers to mix and match products that best address
the needs of their business environments."

SYBASE Intermedia Architecture

With Intermedia, Sybase provides the only open and modular family of
software products designed for building and delivering interactive
multimedia services on the market today. SYBASE Intermedia products
consist of the Intermedia Server, Gain Momentum, and Gain Interplay. These
modular products, in conjunction with video server and set-top hardware
such as HP's Interactive Video Server and set-top boxes, provide a
complete environment for building and delivering interactive multimedia
applications and services.

The Intermedia Server is based on Sybase's SQL Server RDBMS technology and
provides two critical components: control and message integration. The
control service stores and manages information about multimedia data
objects, such as names and locations of movies or product descriptions.
The message integration service provides routing of requests to and from
the various components (set-top box, video server, and back-end business
systems for billing and subscriptions).

Gain Momentum is a powerful multimedia authoring environment for developing
visual, intuitive, and entertaining applications. In addition, Gain
Momentum can access and manipulate data from SYBASE and other databases,
allowing customers to integrate multimedia applications with their
existing, and future business systems. Gain Momentum, which has been
shipping for over two years, is available on Windows NT and a wide variety
of UNIX workstations, including systems from.

Gain Interplay is a software runtime environment that allows interactive
multimedia applications to be played on low-cost, low-memory, hardware
devices such as television set-top boxes and home personal computers. The
Gain Interplay product will be available on a variety of set-top boxes,
including HP's "smart" settops, and on Windows-based personal computers.

HP Interactive Video Server and Set-Top Boxes

HP's Interactive Video Server architecture is designed from the ground up
to produce the lowest possible cost-per-video stream. To accomplish this,
HP uses a video transfer engine technology, not the processing-based
technology typical in computer servers. The HP video transfer engine
optimizes the streaming of compressed video data for large-scale
interactive applications involving from 100 to 10,000 simultaneous
subscribers. It is scalable, expandable, and modular to offer users
maximum flexibility.

The HP Server consists of three key components: control system, video
transfer engine, and storage system. The control system manages and
executes the event-driven transactions of the interactive services. The
video transfer engine profiles high-performance data transfer. The storage
system uses industry-standard MPEG compression technology and is designed
for expandable and highly reliable operation. HP's server technology was
introduced at the Western Cable Show in Anaheim in December 1993, and was
chosen by Pacific Telesis Video Services.

The HP "smart" set-top, capable of delivering interactive television
services as they become available, was developed with research from more
than 4,000 consumers. Tele-Communications, Inc., and Comcast Corporation,
two of the nation's leading cable companies, have agreed to purchase the
set-top, HP's initial product offering in the interactive television
consumer electronics category for deployment in 1995.

its 1993 fiscal year.
