SYBASE INTRODUCES GAIN MOMENTUM 3.0

Newest Version of Sybase's Industry-Leading Multimedia Authoring Tool
Enhances Development of Interactive Applications, Extends Support to
Windows NT

EMERYVILLE, CA, May 24, 1994 - Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced Gain Momentum 3.0, the newest release of its
object-oriented, multimedia authoring tool. Gain Momentum 3.0 provides
several new features to support faster development and easier maintenance
of interactive applications that combine the rich content of multimedia
and flexibility of client/server computing. Key new features include
enhanced tools for the synchronization of video, audio, and animation;
extended object-oriented capabilities; and faster performance. In addition
to major UNIX platforms, Gain Momentum 3.0 now supports Microsoft Windows
NT, a highly strategic platform for bringing advanced multimedia
capabilities to the desktop.

Gain Momentum 3.0 is a key component in the SYBASE Intermedia architecture
for building and delivering interactive, multimedia applications. It is
designed to facilitate easy-to-use, yet powerful software for a new class
of users that Sybase has identified as the "extended enterprise."
Applications for this extended enterprise are characterized by the
requirement for an information-rich interface to improve the productivity
of "elective" users such as business pagers, business customers, and
consumers in the home. Among Sybase's corporate and government customers,
these applications include interactive learning systems such as
computer-based training and electronic performance support systems,
interactive information kiosks, on-line product catalogs, and interactive
television. In addition, Gain Momentum can be used for a range of database
applications for command and control, decision support, and electronic
data interchange (EDI).

"We believe Gain Momentum is the most powerful multimedia application
authoring tool on the market, as evidenced by the broad range of
businesses using it today to deliver applications to the extended
enterprise," said Stu Schuster, executive vice president of marketing for
Sybase. "The introduction of Gain Momentum 3.0, with its advanced
multimedia and full, object-oriented capabilities, furthers the product's
industry-leading position as a development tool for next-generation
applications extending to new classes of elective users."

Attracting the Elective User

The extended enterprise computing environment, comprised of an increasingly
important cross-section of elective users, is dramatically changing
application requirements. More firms are seeking to enhance business
operations and customer service by encouraging elective users - including
employees, customers, and business partners - to tap into their
information systems. Standard business applications have fallen short with
elective users, many of whom are computer novices and find many
applications difficult to use. Even more experienced computer users walk
away from applications that require extensive training.

Multimedia tools are playing a key role in the effort to attract elective
users, combining sound, graphics, and video, to deliver applications that
are entertaining, attractive, and easy to use. Gain Momentum 3.0 goes
beyond the standalone nature of other multimedia tools to provide the
seamless access to corporate relational databases required for integrating
applications across the enterprise.

Gain Momentum 3.0 Features

Sybase's Gain Momentum software provides an integrated development
environment that allows developers to create, edit, and link all forms of
multimedia objects; access and manipulate SQL data from SYBASE, DB2, and
ORACLE servers; script sophisticated application behavior; build in
intuitive training and help systems; and deploy application runtimes
across heterogeneous client/server platforms. Gain Momentum allows
developers to switch between the OSF/Motif and Microsoft Windows user
interfaces to create a native look and feel on their platforms of choice.

Gain Momentum 3.0 offers a number of feature enhancements designed to
accelerate development, facilitate maintenance, and boost performance.

* Timeline Editor. In version 3.0, the Timeline Editor is a new graphical
user interface for visually synchronizing time-based objects such as
video, audio, and animation. The Timeline Editor also allows developers to
coordinate event sequences, such as synchronous message passing.

* Object Browser. The Gain Momentum 3.0 Object Browser lets developers
quickly view and navigate through applications. Using a highly visual
interface, developers can see at a glance all the application objects that
exist within a library, all the pages that exist within an application,
and all the objects that exist on a page. The Object Browser allows
developers to manipulate objects without the added steps of opening parent
objects.

* User-defined classes and libraries. Gain Momentum 3.0 provides a fully
object-oriented development environment that allows users to create
subclasses of predefined system objects, called user-defined classes.
These user-defined classes can be reused, significantly reducing
development time, especially with complex object groups. Full object
inheritance is supported in user-defined classes and libraries.

* Enhanced SOL development environment. Version 3.0 contains significant
enhancements to the SQL functionality, including easier and faster
point-and-click access to relational data, automatic forms generation, and
a more flexible data model for efficiently retrieving stored procedures
and data from multiple tables. The enhanced Data Manager tool provides a
more intuitive mechanism for creating, manipulating, and displaying
relational data.

Other new features of Gain Momentum 3.0 include a binary port for receiving
external data; simplified installation; a system monitoring tool to track
application processes; and expanded on-line help, training, and
documentation. The product's graphical user interface has been enhanced
with a new tool palette of graphic functions and widgts (controls) for
developing interfaces to applications.

Availability and Pricing

Gain Momentum 3.0 is currently scheduled to begin commercial shipment in
June 1994 on Intel-based systems running Windows NT, SunSPARC, IBM AIX,
Silicon Graphics, and HP-UX workstation platforms. Pricing starts at
$10,000 for single-developer licenses. Volume licensing is available for
both developer and runtime versions of the product. Current Gain Momentum
customers will receive the 3.0 version automatically under their
maintenance agreements.
