Microsoft Press Announces Microsoft Excel Developer's Kit
Covers Version 5 for Microsoft Windows and the Apple Macintosh

REDMOND, WA--June 7, 1994--Software developers can create custom
applications in Microsoft Excel from a high-level, compiled programming
language such as Microsoft C or Visual C++ with the MICROSOFT EXCEL
DEVELOPER'S KIT, from Microsoft Press.

This new book-and-disk package was developed by the Microsoft Excel group
and is part of the Microsoft Professional Editions series. It provides the
technical information and programming tools to create high-performance
custom applications, add-ins, and wizards for both Windows and the
Macintosh operating systems using Microsoft Excel.

"Built into the Microsoft Excel 5.0 program is an exposed application
programming interface (API) to the macro language," said Eric Wells,
product manager for Microsoft Excel.

"While Microsoft Excel offers a powerful macro language, Visual Basic for
Applications, developers can also use the Microsoft Excel Developer's Kit
to create custom applications in Microsoft Excel using C."

Performance and control are the main reasons to program Microsoft Excel
using a DLL or code resource instead of the Microsoft Excel macro
language. Using the API, developers can call nearly all the functions
built into Microsoft Excel--such as the mathematical functions and user
interface functions. Anyone familiar with Microsoft Excel and with
programming for Windows or the Macintosh can start building powerful,
integrated applications right away.

"Using the Microsoft Excel Developer's Kit, we were able to seamlessly
embed Braincel version 2.0 into Microsoft Excel," said Stanley Dalnekoff,
President of Promised Land Technologies, Inc. "Everything we needed to do
became directly achievable, and our neural network product fits smoothly
with the rest of the Microsoft Excel functionality."

Eric Wainwright, vice-president of product development at Decisioneering,
Inc., added, "To develop our Crystal Ball forecasting software, our
programmers needed access to nearly all of the built-in functions of
Microsoft Excel from a DLL. The Excel SDK gave us all the tools and
information we needed to implement fast, reliable calls to the Microsoft
Excel API."

"The Microsoft Excel Developer's Kit is a must-have for anyone doing
serious development using Excel," added Tom Chester, President of LEX
Software Systems, Inc. "It's ideal for implementing compute-intensive
routines and provides a thorough explanation of the new OLE data types
used by Visual Basic for Applications. It has played an important part in
a number of the applications we have developed."

The MICROSOFT EXCEL DEVELOPER'S KIT includes:

* Complete documentation of the Microsoft Excel application
programming interface (API) for both Windows and the Macintosh
* Supplementary API files on disk with file format documentation
  for Windows and the Macintosh
* Examples and information on writing DLLs for Visual Basic,
  Applications Edition

Microsoft Excel from C or C++ code
