SPA Donates $100,000 for Computer Skills Training Technology Grants to
Improve Productivity

February 15, 1994 (Washington, DC)--The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) announced today the recipients of its Community Challenge Grant
Program. Ten nonprofit organizations from around the country will each
receive a cash grant of $10,000. These grants will provide unemployed
Americans an opportunity to build computer skills to enable them to
participate fully in the workforce.

The SPA Community Challenge Grant Program will support the following
nonprofit organizations that provide computer skills training:

* Chicago Christian Industrial League, Chicago, IL;
* YWCA/Des Moines Register Learning Center, Des Moines, IA;
* Jobs Central, Inc., Flint, Ml;
* Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol & Drug Abuse, Los Angeles, CA;
* New Directions for Handicapped People, Inc., Miami, FL;
* Middlesex County Business/Industry Foundation, Inc.,
  Middletown, CT;
* South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corp,. New York, NY;
* Utah Opportunities Industrialization Centers, Inc.,
  Salt Lake City, UT;
* ConServe, Inc., Washington, DC;
. YWCA, Wheeling WV

These recipients were selected by a panel of experts from the nonprofit,
business and government sectors.

"Technology is the key to continued productivity in the US, and we believe
it is important that all Americans have the opportunity to acquire
computer skills," explained Ken Wasch, SPA Executive Director. "With these
grants, the SPA is helping disadvantaged workers in these ten cities to
compete more effectively in today's marketplace."

Gifts In Kind America, the leading nonprofit in the field of product
philanthropy, coordinated the grant selection process.

The Software Publishers Association is the principal trade association of
the PC software industry and is dedicated to broad and equal access to
education, training and skills development. Its more than 1,000 members
represent the leading publishers in the business, consumer, and education
software markets. The SPA has a staff of 45 and has offices in Washington,
DC, and Paris, France.

Gifts In Kind America is a national nonprofit organization established a
decade ago to help companies contribute products to charities. In 1993,
the organization distributed more than $78 million in products and
services to 50,000 charities across the country.

The Software Publishers Association, along with Gifts In Kind America, has
make a commitment to put technology in the hands of 100,000 charities by
the year 2000. Since the industry-wide donation program was announced at
SPA's 9th Annual Conference in October, 1993, more than 315,750 packages
of software have been contributed for distribution nationwide.
