RACAL-DATACOM ISX VOICE AND DATA MUXES INTRODUCED DURING COMNET TRADE SHOW

January 25, 1994 -- SUNRISE, FL. -- Racal-Datacom takes DSUs (digital
service units) beyond 56 Kbps to fully featured, fully network managed
T1/fractional T1 DSUs/CSUs. The new Racal-Datacom Excalibur ISX
(Integrated Services Express) 5300 T-1/fractional T-1 DSU/CSU enables
networks to economically handle new and emerging applications requiring
more bandwidth than traditional 56K DSUs.

The ISX 5300 takes advantage of new tariffs and new services that provide
multiples of 56K/64K bandwidth all the way to full T- 1 (1,544K)
bandwidth. ISX 5300 is a standards compliant T1 DSU/CSU, fully featured
and fully network-managed by the Racal Management System CMS 400, a
single, open and integrated network management platform.

The ISX 5300 is the latest component in the ENAR (Excalibur Network Access
Resource) family. ENAR is a highly advanced platform with architecture
that allows a variety of applications and components to be mixed within
the card carrier. ENAR's intelligent backplane and its software does the
busing for whatever application is installed in the chassis. The
management can be extended to additional card cages.

Featuring non-interruptive in-band network management, ISX 5300 is a
cost-effective access T1 DSU/CSU combining the features of a multiplexer,
a multiport DSU and a T1 Channel Service Unit (CSU). It functions as a
full T1 or as a fractional T1 access device, with a link speed of 1.544
Mbps. It offers two DTE ports (RS 232 or V.35), which will be expanded to
six ports in a future release. Port speeds are Nx56 or Nx64 Kbps. Later
releases will support RS 449 and RS 530 DTE ports.

Future releases of the ISX 5300 will expand the number of CSUs from one to
three; will provide optional DS1 or DSX ports; and will provide integral
DACS functionality.

APPLICATIONS

Typical applications where the ISX 5300 offers efficiency and economy for
today's emerging high bandwidth networks are:

1. High Speed LAN Applications. The ISX 5300 is designed for the LAN to LAN
interconnection of local area networks (LANs), bandwidth intensive
applications such as CAD/CAM and the integration of data communications.

2. Groom and Fill Applications. The ISX 5300 can replace up to four
fractional T1s with a single T1, since the 5300 also works as a DACS
(digital access cross-connect switch) for "groom and fill" functionality.
Four separate applications (such as PBX, channel bank, video and LAN),
each using a fractional T1 circuit, can be routed to the ISX 5300's T1
circuit. The T1 circuit is cheaper than four fractional T1 circuits.

"The early 1990s saw growth in the number of DDS applications carried by
wide area networks, but now the trend is for these applications and DDS
networks to be replaced by distributed LANs," said Pete Parlmer, ISX 5300
product manager. "LANs want point-to-point networking with the higher data
rates provided by T1 and FT1 circuits. That's where the ISX 5300
contributes to contemporary networking needs.

"The ISX 5300 has broadband network management featuring inband bit
stealing. Its remote management is built in, in contrast to competing
units that need a dial modem at remote sites," Parlmer said. Network
management can be handled from its front panel, from the Racal Management
System CMS 400 or (in the future) by SNMP proxy. All standard diagnostics
are available.

The Excalibur ISX 5300 is available with a list price starting at $2,695.
