The Securities and Exchange Commision has officially put its long-awaited
Electronic Data Gathering and Retrieval (Edgar) system on-line, and the
easiest way for businesses to link up is via the Internet. The SEC service
provides annual reports, 10-K filings, proxy statements, and much more
about 15,000 publicly traded companies. Previously, this data had to be
accessed through third-party researchers such as Mead Data Central, which
charged over $100,000 a year for direct online access. Now the cost of
having all this information is essentially nothing! The Internet hookup
was engineered by New York University's Stern School of Business with
funding from a two-year National Science Foundation grant. The Edgar
databases are being maintained by the non-profit Internet Multicasting
Service in Washington, originators of the Internet Talk Radio service and
proponents of free Internet access to taxpayer-funded government data. For
more information about Edgar, send an Email message to Mail@town.hall.org

Computer Associates reportedly admitted in court that text in its Early
Bird Version of CA-Simply Tax was copied from Parson Technology's Personal
Tax Edge program. CA has modified the text for the Final Edition, which
will be sent to anyone with an Early Bird Version registration. Iowa-based
Parson sued CA for copyright infringement two months after CA acquired the
software from SoftKey Products. Kurt Seibert, senior VP for business lines
at CA indicated "We had no way of knowing that SoftKey had copied from the
Parson Technology software."

According to various reports, WordPerfect has made plans to lay off 1,000
workers (17.5% of its workforce), citing falling software prices and
rising competition. A spokesman at the Orem, Utah-based PC software vendor
says the manufacturing division will be the hardest hit, with some
operations being outsourced.

Software Development Systems, Oak Brook, Ill. (708-368-0400) has submitted
its SingleStep source-level multitasking debugger to Microsoft for Windows
verification testing. As a result, developers should be assured of Windows
compatibility when developing embedded real-time 68000 applications under
Windows. Because the monitor debugger and simulator share the same user
interface, a developer can switch easily between simulation and monitor
debugging. With SingleStep program building and debugging tools,
developers can simulate the target processor directly on the host machine.
The toolkit's monitor debugger supplies source- and kernel-level debugging
of optimized ANSI C code while programs run remotely in real time.
SingleStep works with the Cross Code C compiler package, consisting of a
68000 family ANSI C/C++ compiler, C library, assembler, and linker.

Advanced Micro Devices has designed a PCnet-SCSI chip that provides a
one-chip replacement for SCSI and Ethernet adapter boards utilizing the
PCI bus. The PCnet-SCSI IC comes in a 132-pin plastic quad flat pack a
little more than 1 inch square, and allows computer manufacturers to
design SCSI and Ethernet into as little as 4 square inches on a
motherboard. AMD sees the PCI bus as the wave of the future for
high-performance personal computers.

OSITECH is focused on developing highly integrated and miniature
connectivity solutions for laptop personal computers. These connectivity
solutions consist of miniature hardware adapters that plug inside the
laptop and communications software. The target market is the rapidly
growing mobile workforce equipped with laptop personal computers that are
demanding access to local and remote computers from their laptops. Wtih
OSITECH's connectivity products, laptops can communicate with remote
computers, send and receive faxes over the telephone network while
simultaneously connected to a Local Area Network or an IBM mainframe. This
"All-Under-the-Hood" approach to communications is an important
requirement for portable computing. Their latest introduction is the
LAN+FAX+MODEM designed exclusively for COMPAQ notebooks and providing
Ethernet, Token Ring, IBM 3270 LAN options as well as 14.4kBps data/fax
modem options. OSITECH Communications, 679 Southgate Dr, Guelph, Ontario

Development of the first practical bipolar lithium ion battery has been
claimed by Yardney Technical Products of Pawcatuck, Conn (203-599-1100).
With a pipolar lithium ion cell as the power source for a typical laptop
computer, operating time between charges would increase from three to four
hours, to at least six to eight hours. Cellular phones, camcorders and
other portable systems would receive similar benefits. While conventional
monopolar lithium ion batteries have seen limited use in portables, the
bipolar design may accelerate market acceptance of the technology.
