MacDisk, MacS and MacScuzzy

A comprehensive range of utilities for Macintosh/PC file exchanges.

Paris, February 1994 - Logiciels & Services DUHEM (L&SD), a young
Paris-based company, recently announced the availability of their three
software products for Macintosh/PC file exchanges under Windows. Each of
these products is aimed at a specific market segment and different user
needs in terms of file size, comfort and speed. "If you've opted for the
best of two worlds by regularly using both Macintosh and PC applications
for what they do best, you need fast, easy and reliable file exchange
utilities to eliminate the headaches generally associated with switching
from one machine to the other," declared L&SD general manager Pierre
Duhem. "Our three products cover all transfer needs between Macintosh and
PC applications, and they do it with a maximum of convenience and
user-friendliness. If you know how to copy a file from one PC directory or
Macintosh folder to another, you can now use our utilities to transfer
data back and forth between these two systems without any problems."

MacDisk for Windows

MacDisk reads, writes and formats Apple Macintosh HD floppy disks without
requiring any hardware add-on. The recently released version 2 includes
new functions and now offers an even wider palette of tools for reading,
writing and formatting Macintosh floppy disks and manipulating Macintosh
files (see the appended technical data sheet). Field-proven in the French
market, where the Apple Macintosh has one of the biggest shares worldwide,
MacDisk has been acclaimed as the technical leader of the field.

"MacDisk is an unobtrusive utility that you can forget when you don't use
it", said Duhem. "We have chosen not to make it a TSR because memory
resources remain scarce, even when the program loads in upper memory. In
an everyday working situation in a heterogeneous environment, you may
typically need to transfer four or five word processing files or
spreadsheets a day. And for more extensive needs, you can keep the Windows
version of MacDisk loaded in the background."

MacSQ for Windows

MacSQ, a utility to read and write Apple Macintosh SyQuest cartridges
(44/88 MB), is now available under DOS and Windows and offers the same
user-friendliness as MacDisk. In the desktop publishing market, new users
are generally trained under Windows, and DOS command-line operations are
at best annoying to them. Furthermore, with PageMaker, Quark Xpress and
other top contenders of the Macintosh market now available under Windows
the need to transfer large files is becoming more acute.

MacSQ is aimed at the mid-size segment (black & white desktop publishing,
scanner output files, color separations up to one page). A function for
reading 21 MB floptical disks will be added in a future release.

MacScuzzy for Windows

MacScuzzy (previously announced as MacDisk Pro and renamed to prevent
confusion with MacDisk) runs under Windows and DOS. In addition to SyQuest
cartridges, MacScuzzy handles a wide range of large-volume Macintosh SCSI
media: 128, 300 and 600 MB magneto-optical cartridges, Bernoulli drives
without capacity limit and more generally all SCSI drives (including plain
hard disks) up to 1 GB. For supported hardware configurations, see the
appended technical data sheet.

The market

With these three products, L&SD covers the main segments of the
Macintosh/PC file exchange market: business software with MacDisk (data
files transfers between Word Mac and Word Windows, between Excel on the
Mac and under Windows, etc.), small and medium-sized DTP and graphics
files with MacSQ (such as scanner output files or layouts for flashing on
different platforms) and large graphics files with MacScuzzy (color
separations, animation, etc.). "As the technical leader in its field, L&SD
is committed to staying abreast with the rapid development of data storage
media," Duhem added. "Through continuous updates and enhancements we will
make sure that our users will always have access to the latest transfer
technology to meet their evolving needs in a constantly changing market."

International versions

MacDisk, MacSQ and MacScuzzy are available in English, German and French
versions, the manuals in English and French. Italian and Spanish versions
are in preparation. All three software products come with an extensive
contextual help system under Windows, practically eliminating the need to
consult the manual in normal use.

As the result of a recent ad series in BYTE, these three products have met
with lively interest from various countries, which proves that they
correspond to a need felt by users everywhere: efficient Macintosh/PC file
exchanges without any hassles.

Price and availability

All three products are now available. The recommended price (not including
VAT where applicable) is 125 US$ for MacDisk, 200 US$ for MacSQ and 245
US$ for MacScuzzy. MacDisk/MacSQ and MacDisk/MacScuzzy bundles are priced
at 275 US$ and 310 US$, respectively.
