Boxborough. Mass.. December 9, 1993--Building on the success of its
innovative Versa notebook computer, NEC Technologies, Inc. (NECT) today
introduced another precedent-setting notebook computer family--the Versa E
Series.

Designed to meet the needs of the most demanding user, the new Versa E
Series is the latest generation of the best-selling UltraLite Versa
notebook computer. The Versa E Series comes equipped with faster
processors, larger hard disk drives, a brighter active-matrix TFT screen,
longer battery life, a smaller AC Adapter, VersaTrack integrated trackball
and a host of additional options, including improved cellular
connectivity.

The original UltraLite Versa notebook computer re-engineered notebook
computing by providing users with five upgrade paths including display,
hard disk drive, memory, processor and pen computing. NEC also
revolutionized the industry with Versa's user-removable, upgradable and
reversible STN monochrome or active-matrix TFT color display design that
converts from a notebook to a pen tablet in seconds. PCMCIA slots allow
users to insert and remove cards without powering down the system. And for
added functionality, DoubleTime technology allows users to remove the
floppy disk drive and insert an additional battery to double the battery
life.

Just as the original Versa notebook computer made significant improvements
in notebook computing, the Versa E Series continues to set the standard to
which other notebook computers are measured. The Versa E Series is the
perfect solution for portable, pen tablet and desktop computing, all
within a notebook form factor.

"The Versa E Series represents yet another major step in response to market
demand," said Bob Levin, director of marketing for NECT's Portable Systems
Group. "In addition to improvements in speed and display quality, we've
added an ergonomically designed trackball, made the AC Adapter smaller and
less bulky, and added performance enhancing features to make the Versa E
notebook computer the most flexible computing and productivity tool for
personal, home, business and mobile users."

Power-Packed Performance That Lasts Longer

The high-performance Versa E Series of notebook computers offer Intel's
newest processor, the SL Enhanced i486 DX2 in 40 or 50 MHz for lightning
quick computing power in the most demanding applications. NEC did not
sacrifice battery life to increase performance. Instead, the Versa E
Series uses a higher-capacity NiMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride) battery that
extends battery life to five to seven hours on monochrome units and three
to five hours on color units. One advantage of the Versa E Series
modularity is DoubleTime, a feature that allows users to replace the
floppy disk drive with an additional battery to double battery life.

Not only did NEC increase the Versa E Series performance, the company added
larger capacity user-removable hard disk drives. Users may choose models
with either a 120MB or 250MB HDD in 40MHz or 209MB or 340MB in 50MHz.

Whether for mobile executives who are processing financial spreadsheets or
a corporate sales representative making an on-screen presentation to
potential accounts or a service professional performing on-site analysis
and field maintenance, the Versa E Series combines exceptional power with
long battery life, creating the perfect mobile resource.

Intuitive Human Interface for Maximum Productivity

The new Versa E Series gives users a choice of three different pointing
devices to best suit their needs and preference. The users may choose to
utilize VersaTrack, NEC's integrated trackball. Or when equipped with a
TouchPen model, all three user interfaces - VersaTrack, the pen or even
the tip of a finger - becomes the notebook computer's pointing device.

Responding to user feedback, NEC placed the 16mm VersaTrack trackball on
the front of the system conveniently below the space bar. Two mouse
buttons are located on either side of the trackball for on-screen
clicking. This intuitive design enables users to keep their hands on the
keyboard, in the home position, while using VersaTrack.

The Versa E Series is the first notebook computer to provide
state-of-the-art TFT active-matrix color pen input and touch capability.
For ultimate functionality, NEC has teamed up with MicroTouch to add
optional TouchPen capability to the Versa E Series. TouchPen technology
allows users to choose the most appropriate pointing device for any given
situation. The pen is ideal for pointing, on-screen annotations or
capturing signatures. And the touch screen is ideal for intuitive
applications such as point-of-sale, information kiosk, gaming, process
control and more.

On TouchPen models the following factory-installed components add maximum
versatility and functionality to the Versa E Series:

* New LCD chassis with 200 dpi TouchPen Digitizer from MicroTouch
  and tethered pen
* Windows for Pen Computing and the Pen Essentials software
collection from Slate Corporation, including Looseleaf
Notetaker, WinFax Pen, Day-Timer Pen Scheduler, and PenBook.
* Hand-writing recognition engine from CIC (Computer Intelligence
Corp.), the leaders in this technology

NEC Reaffirms its Leadership with Brighter, Faster Color Displays

Once again, NEC, the leader in display technology, has improved color
models to include visually brighter screens. Continuing to set the
precedent in active-matrix color displays, the Versa E Series displays are
20 percent brighter than the previous generation, while maintaining the
same power usage. For enhanced system performance, the Versa E Series also
includes advanced video hardware acceleration using BitBLT technology,
offering video graphics twice as fast as the original Versa, and
simultaneous video projecting 256 colors at 1024 x 768 dots-per-inch at a
70MHz flicker-free refresh rate for even better simultaneous video display
quality.

Lightweigt, Portable AC Adapter--50 Percent Smaller

Responding to the needs of the mobile professional, NEC redesigned the AC
Adapter to be 50 percent smaller than the previous generation. Even the
cord is thinner, more pliable, lighter weight and less bulky for travel.
The Small AC Adapter is compatible with all Versa models (UltraLite Versa
and Versa E Series).

Port Replicator

For users who want the convenience of a one-touch access to desktop
resources, but don't need the extra expansion capabilities of a Docking
Station, the Port Replicator provides the ideal solution. Available as a
low-cost alternative to the Docking Station, this option offers one
connection to desktop resources instead of a possible five.

The Port Replicator has the same ports as the Versa and it's compatible
with all Versa models. The easy-to-use locking system securely anchors the
Versa to the Port Replicator and guides the connection and disconnection
of the Versa.

VersaConnect Cellular Upgrade

For wireless connectivity from anywhere, the VersaConnect upgrade provides
fully integrated wireless cellular communications for the Versa E Series.
This option allows users to send and receive data via existing cellular
networks. VersaConnect includes all the necessary components to connect a
Versa to a cellular telephone as well as NEC SmartAssistant software and a
carrying case.

VersaConnect technology incorporates the latest modem technology in its
14.4Kbps high-speed data/fax PCMCIA modem card. Special error correcting
code, ETC (Enhanced Throughput Cellular) included on the modem card,
significantly reduces the occurrence of errors in cellular data
transmissions.

NEC's SmartAssistant software offers comprehensive help for troubleshooting
cellular communications.

"With on-line help and step-by-step menu-driven directions, the connection,
transmission and reception of data becomes easy and convenient for
VersaConnect users," said Colleen Fitzpatrick, manager of cellular
products at NEC Technologies.

NEC is committed to providing reliable and tested cellular notebook
solutions in the industry and has established partnerships with cellular
carriers and leading modem manufacturers. Through these partnerships, NEC
will provide customers with systems configured and finely tuned for
communicating over cellular networks. Improvements in error correcting
code and the introduction of modem pool service by cellular carriers has
made cellular data communications as simple and effective as telephone
line communications.

Initially, VersaConnect technology will support direct connection of Nokia
Model 121 and Model PT128 cellular telephones. NEC plans to add support
for NEC cellular telephones in early 1994, and other manufacturers in the
spring. VersaConnect technology is compatible with UltraLite Versa and
Versa E Series models.

Guaranteed Maximum Return on Investment for Mobile Professionals

The original Versa notebook computer won immediate industry-wide
recognition as a technologically-advanced notebook computer line that had
built-in protection from obsolescence. NEC takes this award-winning
feature one step further by enabling current owners to upgrade to the
enhanced Versa E performance, while continuing to use all other components
from their existing Versa. With the Versa E 50MHz System Base Upgrade,
users can truly preserve their initial Versa investment. All original
components such as the LCD, battery, floppy disk drive, AC Adapter and
hard disk drive fit into the new enhanced Versa E chassis that includes
the integrated trackball, 50MHz processor, enhanced video and updated
PCMCIA slots.

"NEC wanted to expand upon its promise to protect our buyer's investments,"
said Levin. "So we made the Versa E Series more feature rich and increased
users' return on investment by providing full forward and backward
compatibility into the Versa's upgrade paths."
