UNDOCUMETED DOS, SECOND EDITION IS NOW AVAILABLE FROM ADDISON-WESLEY

A COMPLETE REVISION OF THIS BESTSELLING, CONTROVERSIAL BOOK

December 22, 1993 -- Reading, MA - Addison-Wesley announces the publication
this month of Undocumented DOS, Second Edition: A Programmer's Guide to
Reserved MS-DOS Functions and Data Structures, by Andrew Schulman, Ralf
Brown, David Maxey, Raymond J. Michels, and Jim Kyle. This book is the
definitive guide for programmers to those functions and data structures
within MS-DOS that have been listed as "reserved"--undocumented--by
Microsoft. Because many important programs make extensive use of
undocumented functions, programmers must know how to use them.
Undocumented DOS, Second Edition puts the power of these reserved
functions and data structures at programmer's disposal, enabling them to
judiciously exploit the power of undocumented features and functions.

The first edition of Undocumented DOS and its companion volume,
Undocumented Windows, have been a part of the widely-publicized
controversy surrounding allegations that Microsoft has engaged in
anti-competitive business practices. In 1991 through 1993 the Federal
Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition investigated antitrust complaints
by competitors against Microsoft. The FTC ultimately decided not to pursue
any legal action against Microsoft, but the Justice Department has begun
its own investigation into possible antitrust actions by the company.

A revision of one of the best DOS programming books ever published,
Undocumented DOS, Second Edition is now updated and expanded to include
coverage of MS-DOS 5 and 6, Novell DOS, and Windows 3.1, as well as all of
the newest interrupts and data structures that have appeared since the
first edition. Undocumented DOS, Second Edition also provides all new
coverage of disassembling DOS and DOS internals, as well as extensive new
material on the interaction between DOS and Windows.

The disk that comes with the book contains powerful programming utilities,
including a new version of the popular INTRSPY debugger, PHANTOM, a
network-redirector XMS RAM disk, DEVLOD for loading device drivers from
the command line, and INTRLST, a complete reference of all DOS interrupts
in an easily viewable electronic format.

Andrew Schulman is a contributing editor to Microsoft Systems Journal and
Dr. Dobb's Journal, and is coauthor of the bestselling books Undocumented
Windows and Extending DOS (both from Addison-Wesley). He is also the
author of the Windows Source disassembly toolkit from V Communications.

David Maxey is co-founder of Smart Storage, Inc., a software company
specializing in storage management systems. He previously managed the
CD/Networker development project at Lotus, and he is a coauthor of the
bestselling book, Undocumented Windows (Addison-Wesley).

Ralf Brown, coauthor of PC Interrupts (Addison-Wesley), is an independent
software developer, holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie-Mellon
University and is well known in the online community for maintaining the
"Interrupt List."

Raymond J. Michels is a senior software engineer for Becton Dickinson in
Maryland, and an independent consultant specializing in MS-DOS
applications, system programs, and Microsoft Windows.

Jim Kyle has written extensively on MS-DOS and contributed to The DOS
Programmer's Reference and The MS-DOS Encyclopedia.

Addison-Wesley is a worldwide publishing company based in Reading,
Massachusetts, and is a recognized leader in the fields of computer
science, engineering, mathematics, and physics.

Undocumented DOS, Second Edition has a suggested retail price of $44.95
with disk, is 880 pages, paperback, and is available wherever computer
books are sold.
