FIRST 262,000-COLOR FLAT PANEL DISPLAY WITH TOUCH THAT PLUGS DIRECTLY INTO
VGA ANALOG OUTPUT

December 27, 1993 -- Greer, SC . . . Computer Dynamics introduces the VAMP
II, the first flat panel solution that lets you drive a 262,000-color TFT
LCD and touchscreen directly from your PC. Like the original VAMP (Video
Analog Monitor Panel), the VAMP II is a compact (11.5" x 8.5" x 3") color
TFT LCD and optional touchscreen unit that plugs directly into any
standard VGA analog output. Since the LCD itself displays 262,000 colors,
the VAMP II handles graphics-intensive programs, e.g., multimedia
incorporating full-motion video, with the results you previously achieved
only with a CRT. This makes it an ideal choice for information display
systems, sophisticated machine control systems, and presentation systems.

Utilizing the latest in TFT technology, the VAMP II's 10.4", 640x480
display generates six bits per color, resulting in the total palette of
262,000 distinct colors. Earlier 3-bit color TFT LCDs, capable of
displaying only 512 distinct colors, create the extra colors needed by
most programs through techniques such as dithering or frame rate
modulation. These techniques, however, sometimes result in flicker or
unstable images, which are less than ideal for high resolution graphics
and full-motion video. The VAMP II corrects these problems and handles all
the challenges of switching from a CRT to a flat panel display. And since
the VAMP II plugs directly into your computer's VGA output and not into a
proprietary adapter board, as with many other solutions, you get the full
advantage of your VGA card, even those specializing in full-motion video.

The VAMP II's optional resistive touchscreen comes with an RS-232 cable to
your computer. It also features a NEMA 4/12 bezel for challenging
environments. Capacitive and infrared touchscreens are also available. The
entire VAMP II, contained in a sturdy metal OEM frame, is easy to mount in
your enclosure. It consumes less than 25 watts, compared to a CRT alone at
150 watts.

Pricing for the VAMP II is $3995 (OEM quantity). Delivery is from stock to
30 days. For more information on the VAMP II or other flat panel display

BACKGROUND NOTES TO "VAMP II", THE SEQUEL

The VAMP Concept

Building on the technology that Computer Dynamics popularized with its VAMP
I, introduced a year ago, Computer Dynamics again expands the audience of
the flat panel display with the VAMP II. Like the original VAMP, the VAMP
II is a simple concept, backed up by some fancy interface electronics. The
concept: make a flat panel display with touch that can plug directly into
a VGA analog output, just as a CRT does. The bulky, power-hungry CRT and
keyboard can thus be replaced by the slim and cool flat panel with
touchscreen. The tricky part? How to mate the analog plug from your PC
with the digital signals expected by the flat panel display.

VAMP I vs. VAMP II -- What's the Difference?

Basically, the display and its capabilities:

VAMP I  - 10.4" VGA color TFT LCD; 3 bits/color;
          512 total colors

VAMP II - 10.4" VGA color TFT LCD; 6 bits/color;
          262,000 total colors

The VAMP II eliminates the major limitation of the 512-color panel -- its
attempts to create the colors that most programs these days expect.
Sophisticated flat panel drivers, such as those on our own single board
computers, can create up to 64,000 colors on a 3-bit LCD by techniques
such as frame rate modulation or dithering (switching colors on and off).
Most of the time this works fairly well, but particularly where there are
large patches of the same color, the eye will perceive some blinking.
Also, color gradations are not nearly so smooth on the 3-bit panel as they
are on the 6-bit LCD.

With more colors, accurately reproduced, the VAMP II excells in handling
today's most challenging display assignments -- multimedia and full-motion
video. And because the VAMP II plugs directly into your VGA analog output,
and not into another adapter board, you get the full benefits of all the
features your VGA card offers. Caveat emptor! Many other "VAMP-like"
solutions are really a two-step process, taking your video through an
intermediary adapter board before it gets to the LCD. These adapters are
typically not as functionally advanced as the video cards on the market
now.
