SYBASE ANNOUNCES GENERAL AVAILABILITY OF REPLICATION SERVER

Replication Server installed at over 50 customer sites to provide reliable,
enterprisewide data delivery

EMERYVILLE, CA, December 6, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced production
shipments of its recently announced Replication Server product, a key
component of Sybase's System 10 product family designed specifically to
meet the needs of enterprise wide, client/server computing. The
Replication Server is software for distributed, high-availability systems
that provides reliable and consistent delivery of data and transactions
throughout enterprises with dispersed and heterogeneous hardware and data
sources. Designed over three years with active customer participation, the
Replication Server product entered a rigorous beta test phase in June,
1993 and now forms the foundation for data distribution in dozens of
enterprise-wide client/server applications.

"Our customers tried to solve the problem of replication on their own many
times," said Stewart Schuster vice president of marketing at Sybase.
"Working with them to design Replication Server allowed us to develop an
architecture that effectively addresses the needs for replication in
real-world, bet-your-business applications."

Customer Uses of Replication Server

Businesses have identified several essential criteria for replication
technology including: 1) continuous operations despite system failure 2)
consistent information delivery 3) quick information access and delivery
4) easy, centralized MIS administration 5) local site autonomy and 6)
heterogeneous system integration. Everest Technologies, a Houston-based
outsourcing firm, uses Replication Server to provide continuous operations
in case of system failures. "We use Replication Server as a primary back
up for a natural gas trading system that handles over 200MB of data
daily," said Ken Dulin, vice president of Everest Technologies. "Already
we've moved from complex, half-day recoveries to a transparent redundant
primary ready to go in the event of failure."

Harris Corporation is another customer using the Replication Server
software at the core of a demanding client/server application. Its Harris'
Controls Division designs energy management systems for electric utilities
providers. The company uses Replication Server software to consolidate
electricity production data from multiple power plants with customer data
to produce customer electric bills. Harris also uses Replication Server in
an offsite location as a near-real-time back up copy of its corporate
database; in the event of a major catastrophe, the system won't go down.

Other customers using Replication Server include a major Wall Street
trading firm that uses the product to synchronize data in its trading
markets throughout the world; a large government agency uses Replication
Server to distribute data for nuclear policies and requirements planning;
and a major telecommunications company is using the product to track
product defects throughout its worldwide organization.

Replication Server

The Replication Server allows organizations to share data among multiple
sites in an organization while ensuring the integrity and consistency of
the data in every location. In a distributed systems environment,
Replication Server products are deployed at multiple sites. Each piece of
data typically has a primary site which is the actual real source of the
data. Remote sites then subscribe to the data they need, and the
Replication Server delivers it to them. A component of the Replication
Server, the Log Transfer Manager, monitors the log for committed
transactions that change the primary site data. The Log Transfer Manager
then passes that information to the Replication Server which delivers the
actual committed transactions to the sites that have requested them.
Additionally, the Replication Server Manager, a powerful GUI-based tool,
provides configuration, performance monitoring and troubleshooting
capabilities for the administration of the system.

Sybase Versus The Competition

"Others are attempting to follow our lead by announcing their own
replication capabilities, and we're pleased to see that they've
acknowledged the need for replication in the marketplace," said Malcolm
Colton, director of server product marketing. "However, we believe that
Replication Server is still the only product available that effectively
implements a total system and architecture based on customer experience."

The Replication Server is based on a model for replicating data called
Single Site Resolution. This model provides a simple and safe
implementation by allowing data to be updated from the replicate site only
in the data's designated primary location. In Sybase's Replication Server,
updates to primary data can originate from any replicate site using
asynchronous remote procedure calls. Conversely, in "update anywhere"
implementations, the same data can be altered at the same time in
different places! complicating data recovery in case of system failure and
threatening the integrity of the data. Additionally, the Sybase model uses
a Log Transfer Manager to replicate transactions only after they're
completed. The Log Transfer Manager does not interfere with the operations
of the production database where the data originated. Unlike the Sybase
product, replication systems using triggers interfere with the normal
operations of the source database and can burden OLTP performance. In
addition, triggers introduce complex interdependencies that need to be
accounted for by application developers and database administrators.

Pricing and Availability

The Replication Server software is currently in production on Sun SPARC and
IBM RS/6000 platforms. North American pricing ranges from $2,800-$69,500
and is based on the number of server connections. The product is in beta
on DEC Alpha OSF/1, HP 9000, NCR 3000 and Sun Solaris platforms; general
availability on these platforms is expected by year end. Additional
platforms are expected in the first half of 1994.

SYBASE System 10

The Replication Server product is a key server component of Sybase's System
10 family, which was created to meet the specific needs of enterprise
client/server computing. With today's announcement, four of the eleven
System 10 products are in production: SQL Monitor, OmniSQL Gateway, SQL
Server 10 and Replication Server.
