NEC INTRODUCES BEST VALUE PERSONAL LASER PRINTER FOR MACINTOSH ENVIRONMENT

Boxborough. Mass.. December 6, 1993--NEC Technologies, Inc. today brought a
full-featured yet compact and affordable laser printer to the Macintosh
environment with the introduction of the Silentwriter Model 640 personal
laser printer.

"The Silentwriter Model 640 delivers an unbeatable combination of
professional level performance and print quality at a price most any Mac
owner can afford," said Al Segreti, printer marketing manager at NEC
Technologies. "It's the best personal value laser printer for the
Macintosh environment, and is ideal for personal use or the small
office/home office buyer."

Major features of the Silentwriter Model 640 include: a Genuine Adobe
Postscript Level 2 interpreter for applications compatibility; 52 fonts
(17 Adobe fonts, 35 True Type fonts on disk); resident True Type and ATM
rasterizers for universal font compatibility; 3MB of RAM with Forward
Memory Technology (FMT) for increased throughput; AppleTalk interface;
Energy Star compliant, and a unique two year overnight replacement
warranty.

The new printer is one of the smallest laser printers on the market, saving
valuable desk space. It has a 200-sheet paper capacity and prints at up to
6ppm.

Better Print Quality

Several features combine to produce a professional quality "look". The
Silentwriter Model 640 is a true laser printer and provides Macintosh
users with 300 DPI resolution. NEC's patented Sharp Edge Technology
eliminates "jaggies" by producing crisp, smooth edges in text and
graphics. Microfine toner ensures fine lines and crisp blacks.

Better Compatibility

With an industry-standard Genuine Adobe PostScript Level 2 interpreter and
both True Type and Adobe Type Manager font rasterizers built-in, documents
and fonts will print from virtually any application. Included with the
Model 640 is the powerful Adobe Level 2 PostScript driver that speeds
printing by up to 35% and has direct screen control of embedded features
such as Sharp Edge Technology and energy saver modes. Quick install
software allows printer driver installation with one mouse click. The
Silentwriter Model 640 supports Macintosh system software, 6.0.7 and
higher.

Energy Star Rated

The Silentwriter Model 640 has earned an EPA Energy Star rating. It saves
energy by entering a user-selectable standby mode through on-screen
control. Since the Model 640 uses an advanced contact printing process, it
emits no ozone into the workplace.

Pricing and Availability

The Silentwriter Model 640, available in December through NEC's network of
authorized resellers, is expected to have an estimated street price of
approximately $800.
