Rockwell Announces Packet Radio Data/Fax Modem

Rockwell International Corporation announced at Comdex the RC32ACM, its
first in a family of wireless data communications products. This modem
device set integrates Mobitex(tm) Packet Radio technology with Rockwell's
state-of-the-art wireline modem technology, providing original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) with a low-power, high-integration wireless solution
for portable computing applications.

The RC32ACM implements the Mobitex packet data transmission protocol to
provide worldwide connectivity to any user with a public E-mail address.
The Mobitex protocol takes data from a personal computer and allows it to
be delivered through a Mobitex wireless network to a service provider/host
application /gateway and into other networks such as the Internet. In the
U.S., Mobitex service is provided by RAM Mobile Broadcasting, whose
network provides coverage to more than 80 percent of the business
locations throughout the country. Networks using the Mobitex protocol
provide packet radio coverage in more than 10 other countries worldwide.

Modems using the Rockwell RC32ACM chipset provide a PC user with instant
access to a growing range of services via the Mobitex network.
Applications include E-Mail and wireless access to the increasing number
of information services. The modem chipset will also facilitate many
remote monitoring applications, allowing any piece of equipment containing
the device to be monitored or reprogrammed inexpensively, whether or not a
phone line is nearby.

The RC32ACM packet radio benefits include:

- Seamless roaming - The RAM Mobitex network ensures seamless
roaming across the U.S., allowing the RC32ACM to provide
transparent communication without the need to log-on and
establish a connection, effectively turning a notebook PC
into a remote E-mail message delivery terminal.

- No undelivered messages - If a unit is off the air, out of
range or out of battery power, the network will store messages
until they can be safely delivered.

- Integrated wireline capability - The RC32ACM provides low-cost
telephone line back-up for situations where wireless coverage
is not available or when large amounts of data need to be
transferred. Additionally, the chipset offers full access to
the installed base of facsimile machines worldwide.

The RC32ACM packet radio modem chipset is compliant with the Mobitex
specification, and can reach data transfer rates of 8 kbps. It supports
GMSK modulation and demodulation, Mobitex Asynchronous Communication
(MASC) user interface and AT command set extensions for packet radio
operation. Additionally, it includes a full protocol implementation,
including packet assembly/disassembly per Mobitex MPAK, and provides data
framing including forward error correction, interleaving/de-interleaving
and data scrambling.

Rockwell's Mobitex solutions are available in two versions: the
two-package, low-profile RC32DPM data pump and the three-package RC32ACM
integrated modem solution, which consists of a modem data pump and
integrated modem controller. Both versions support 14.4 Kbps data
throughput (V.32 bis, V.32, V.22 bis, V.22 A/B, V.23 and V.21; Bell 212A
and 103) and 14.4 Kbps send/receive facsimile throughput (V.17, V.29, V.27
ter and V.21 channel 2).

The two-package RC32DPM is offered as two 100-pin low profile PQFP
packages, and the three-package RC32ACM is offered as one 80-pin and two
100-pin PQFP packages. A single-chip, 68-pin PLCC version of the RC32ACM
data pump is also available for applications where low-profile package
height is not a requirement. Samples are available now and volume
production will begin in January 1994. Pricing for 10K quantities is $75.
