Apple Computer Awarded Newton Contract by Department of Defense

Joint development project ProMED to explore Newton applications for health
care environment

CUPERTINO, California--December 6, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced that it has received a $1 million contract from the Department
of Defense (DoD) to explore and validate the application of Newton
technologies within the medical sector of the DoD. In collaboration with
KPMG/Peat Marwick, Apple Computer will lead the ProMED project from
October 1993 through August 1994 to investigate how the DoD can improve
health care services, streamline processes, and lower the cost of health
care by incorporating Apple's cutting-edge Newton Personal Digital
Assistant (PDA) technology into the DoD's health care practices. Integral
to the project is the Newton MessagePad, Apple's first handheld
communications assistant which allows people to communicate, gather,
manage and share information.

The 11-month ProMED investigation will focus on the following areas:

* Plausible application areas and associated
  productivity/cost savings;
* Possible changes in health care processes required
  for effective deployment;
* Further technology developments, if any, required
  to ensure successful deployment.

"The ProMED project will have a great impact on setting the technological
direction of the DoD," said Col. Fred Goeringer, ProMED Program Director,
U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency. "Apple's Newton technology has the
potential of providing timely information and streamlined processes in a
cost-effective manner, thus enabling the DoD to provide leading edge
patient care while reducing health care costs for the government."

The DoD believes the Newton technology has far-reaching potential benefits
beyond the military hospitals. "The findings and applications which result
from the ProMED study will benefit not only the DoD, but also the private
sector health care industry which will probably find direct application of
ProMED-developed solutions," said Col. Goeringer.

"We've had significant success in applying Apple technology to the medical
community,'' said Henry Clifton, director of Apple's Federal Systems Group
based in Reston, VA. "Newton technology is particularly suited to health
care applications because of the communications and mobile capabilities.
Because of Newton's mobile capabilities, we've received tremendous
interest from the armed forces and Federal law enforcement agencies."

In addition to the health care industry, Apple USA is targeting Newton
solutions for the pharmaceutical industry, financial services and
professional services.

Phased Implementation at Three DoD Sites

The ProMED project will be implemented in three phases -- Concept
Introduction, Concept Demonstration, and Concept Validation -- in three
DoD hospitals: Walter Reed Army Medical Center - Washington, D.C.,
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base-Dayton, OH., and Brooke Army Medical
Center in San Antonio, TX.

The Concept Introduction phase, kicked-off on November 8th in the three
pilot hospitals, focuses on the use of Newton as a personal productivity
tool through personal organizer functions such as the electronic calendar
and database, provider-to-provider communications using Newton's beaming
and faxing capabilities, and rounds note-taking which allows for free text
entry and printing on demand.

Scheduled for implementation in December 1993 through March 1994, the
Concept Demonstration phase will introduce health care-specific
applications on Newton such as the ordering of lab and radiology
diagnostics (form creation, dock and send), results notification through
Newton paging capabilities, and prescription ordering (form creation, dock
and send). The goal of this phase is to provide an understanding of
docking and data transmission issues from inpatient rounds as well as
prescription and lab requests.

In the third and final phase of ProMED -- Concept Validation -- untethered,
bidirectional use for selected applications will be implemented.
Scheduling capabilities will allow physicians to download their schedule
into a Newton MessagePad. Clinical documentation capabilities will also be
evaluated, thus allowing Newton-equipped health care providers to link and
share clinical documents such as problem lists, progress notes,
visit/encounter notes, medical histories and treatment protocols with each
other. These documents may also be linked with the ordering of lab and
radiology diagnostics.

Since its introduction in early August 1993, over 50,000 Newton MessagePad
units have been purchased in North America and the UK. Partners and
licensees of Newton technology include Sharp, Siemens/ROLM, Motorola and
Matsushita and more recently, Alcatel, Ameritech, ARM, Bell South, British
Telecom, Cirrus Logic, Deutsche Telekom, GEC Plessey Semiconductors, LSI
Logic, US West, and VLSI Technologies. These companies have embraced the
Newton platform as an integral part of personal communications in products
and markets worldwide.

Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL)
