Microsoft Press Introduces Inside OLE 2

The Fast Track to Building Powerful Object-Oriented Applications with
Windows Objects

OLE 2 is the foundation for "document-oriented computing" and the standard
for the way major software applications will work together. It's a new
world of functionality for the user and yet another set of challenges for
the developer. Luckily, a comprehensive guide to exploring, understanding,
and fully implementing this exciting technology is now available in a new
book from Microsoft Press entitled INSIDE OLE 2.

Two Paths to OLE 2

The major challenges facing developers today are how to add OLE 2
functionality to existing applications and how to build OLE 2 applications
from scratch. Author Kraig Brockschmidt uses two important strategies in
INSIDE OLE 2 to help readers phase into OLE 2 programming. First, after
building a foundation of basic understanding of OLE and Windows Objects,
he explains how to incrementally implement a full layer of OLE
functionality. Second, he builds two distinct applications throughout the
book. In one case, he begins with a conventional Windows-based application
and then gradually replaces traditional Windows API-based code with OLE
2-based code. In the other case, he builds a complete application from the
ground up using Windows Objects. His concise tutorials combined with
hands-on example programs on disk bring OLE 2 to life.

INSIDE OLE 2 is divided into four sections that build on one another:

* Windows Objects explains the rationale for OLE 2, describes the
architecture, and places OLE in the larger context of building
object-oriented applications based on the Component Object Model.

* Object-Oriented System Features: Files and Data Transfer shows how
applications can store and transfer data in new and better ways using
object-oriented logic and mechanisms, including a complete drag-and-drop
protocol.

* Compound Documents: OLE introduces container applications, embedded
objects, object handlers, monikers, and the rest of the powerful bag of
tricks required to bring OLE to the surface.

* Compound Documents: In-Place Activation explains how to use the mechanism
of in-place activation, the basis for a real document-centric user
interface.

Two 3.5-inch disks contain 44 source code examples that demonstrate how to
implement objects and how to integrate OLE 2 features into an application.
An expanded table of contents makes all the information easily accessible,
and a comprehensive index leads readers quickly to information on any
topic in the book.

Kraig Brockschmidt knows OLE inside and out. As a top Microsoft developer
who has been working with OLE since version 1, he fully understands the
challenges facing today's corporate and commercial developers. He is a
primary leader of seminars on OLE 2 at industry conferences and has
written a series of articles on OLE for Microsoft Systems Journal.

Major Promotional Support

INSIDE OLE 2 will be officially released at the Microsoft Professional
Developer' s Conference in Anaheim, California, on December 15, 1993. The
first printing of 20,000 copies will be supported by full-page
advertisements in Dr. Dobb's Journal, PC Techniques, Microsoft Systems
Journal, and user group journals around the country.
