NewtonMail To Bring Powerful Electronic Mail to Newton Users

LAS VEGAS, Nevada--November 15, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
that NewtonMail will be available in a series of commercial releases over
the next 60 days to users of Newton MessagePad communications assistant
and other Newton products created by licensees of Newton technology. Phase
one will begin today with an expanded test pilot, immediately followed by
a limited commercial release to the thousands of Newton users in the
United States who have sent in response cards that were packaged with
their Newton MessagePad. In the final release, NewtonMail will become
available throughout the United States. NewtonMail is the first in a
series of new electronic communications services being developed by Apple
Online Services, a business unit within Apple Computer's Personal
Interactive Electronics (PIE) division.

NewtonMail enables Newton users to exchange text messages easily with each
other and with anyone who can be reached on CompuServe, America Online,
MCI Mail, AppleLink, SprintMail, EasyLink, and other online services
accessible via the Internet. In addition, NewtonMail allows electronic
exchange of Newton information such as notepad messages (including
graphics), business cards, and calendar appointments between NewtonMail
subscribers.

"The combination of Newton technology and NewtonMail provides people with a
seamless means of communication, as well as access to numerous online
services. NewtonMail subscribers will be on the leading edge of anytime,
anywhere communications," said Peter Friedman, director of Apple Online
Services. "The simple and powerful communications capabilities of
NewtonMail provide yet another incentive for users to harness the power of
Newton Intelligence."

By taking advantage of intelligent assistance support for addressing
messages, users can send mail from any application within Newton. In
addition, NewtonMail uses metaphors consistent with other built-in Newton
applications such as the In-Box and Out-Box functions.

To get started with NewtonMail, users need a Newton device, a Newton Fax
Modem, a phone line, and a NewtonMail account. The NewtonMail Starter Kit
includes a booklet describing the service, a pocket-sized listing of
worldwide network access telephone numbers, and a certificate with a
password and registration number for automatic online registration.

All Newton products sold to date by Apple and its licensees have been
packaged with a response card that enables users to apply for a NewtonMail
Starter kit. Users in the United States who have returned their response
card will receive NewtonMail Starter Kits by mail when NewtonMail begins
shipping. Over the next few months Apple plans to package Starter kits
with Newton devices.

The NewtonMail service will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
except for regularly scheduled periods of maintenance. NewtonMail is
expected to be accessible from locations around the world, providing
convenient local access to global communications networks.

The monthly fee in the United States is $8.95, and this will include 2 free
non-prime hours of usage. Each hour thereafter is $4.95, and a $2.95 per
hour primetime network surcharge will be applied toward all US usage.
Pricing includes free sign up, and there will be no surcharge for the use
of the NewtonMail-Internet gateway. Charges will be hilled directly to the
user's credit card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover Card)
each month. English language versions of NewtonMail are planned to be
available in countries around the world in 1994. Native language German,
Japansese, and French versions of NewtonMail are also expected to be
available at a later date. Pricing for usage outside the US will be
announced at a later date.

Apple Online Services (AOS) is developing a portfolio of subscription-based
information services for the Newton family of products. In the future, AOS
plans to offer Newton users a wealth of information ranging from news,
weather, sports, travel and financial information, to be delivered several
times a day, depending on the nature of the service.
