Apple Ships Newton Fax Modem Card Today

LAS VEGAS, Nevada--November 15, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
that the Newton Fax Modem Card, a credit-card sized PCMCIA modem, is
shipping throughout the United States. The Newton Fax Modem Card offers
Newton users all the features and functionality of the external Newton Fax
Modem which is currently available, but in a convenient and compact PCMCIA
type II format card.

The Newton Fax Modem Card can be inserted into the Newton MessagePad and
allows users to communicate via NewtonMail, other online services and send
faxes anywhere.

"The Newton Fax Modem Card further increases the portability and
convenience of the Newton MessagePad communications assistant, enabling
Newton users to communicate with even more ease than they can today" said
Steve Rea, product marketing manager of Apple Computer, Inc.'s Personal
Interactive Electronics (PIE) division. "With the Fax Modem Card, Apple
continues to expand the range of communications options currently
available to users of Newton technology."

The Newton Fax Modem Card package contains everything needed to connect it
to a Newton MessagePad communications assistant and an analog phone line.
The Fax Modem Card communicates at 2400 bits per second (for electronic
mail and online services) and 9600 bits per second (for faxes). It's
compatible with the Hayes AT command set, Group 3 fax standard, MNP 2 and
4 error correction, and V.42bis and MNP 5 data compression.

The Newton Fax Modem Card is expected to be available in computer
retailers, campus resellers, consumer electronics stores and K-12
institutions across the United States. The Apple price for the Newton Fax
Modem Card is expected to be US$220.00.

The Newton Fax Modem card was developed jointly by Apple Computer and
Megahertz Corporation of Salt Lake City, (UT).
