aboard. This marks the first time an off-the-shelf computer product has
been taken along on a space flight. It's also the first time a color

low Earth orbit. The ThinkPad is running a NASA tst program to determine
whether radiation levels in space cause memory anomalies in notebooks.

The Demise of DOS? A recent article in the December 6th issue of
INFORMATIONWEEK magazine discussed the decreasing demand for DOS based
applications in corporate environments, etc. Purchases of DOS based
applications, after peaking near the end of 1992, have now steadily eroded
in each of the last three quarters per SPA reports. Supposedly more than
10 million WordPerfect for DOS users have probably seen their last upgrade
according to Dave Moon, senior VP of development for WordPerfect. The
company will probably only offer minor updates after release 6.0. Other
companies, including Lotus, Borland and others are re-evaluating the
demand for future DOS products as well.... Borland is concentrating on
Windows products, SPC has no plans for upgrades to the DOS version of
Harvard Graphics, and DOS 7 expected next year could be the last version
of DOS. According to the Gartner Group, running a DOS-baesd computer for
five years costs around $40,000 while running a Windows PC costs $37,000
and running a Mac costs $31,000.
