Newton MessagePad Picks Up Four Major Industry Awards

SANTA CLARA, California--December 7, 1993--Underscoring the growing support
for its ground-breaking Newton technology, Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced that its Newton MessagePad recently scooped up four more major
industry awards. PC Magazine, PC LapTop Computers Magazine, Byte magazine
and Reseller Management magazine have recently bestowed some of their most
significant honors on the Newton MessagePad.

PC Magazine and PC LapTop Computers Magazine acknowledged the prowess of
Newton technology recently at Comdex/Fall in Las Vegas, the largest
computer industry tradeshow in the United States. The Newton MessagePad
was honored with the PC LapTop Computers Magazine 1993 Editors' Choice
Award for "Most Promising Portable" on November 17, 1993. PC Magazine
awarded the Newton MessagePad first place in the "Design Category" of
their prestigious 10th Annual Technical Excellence Awards, acknowledging
that the creation of Newton technology was an extraordinary
accomplishment, and saluting Apple's sophisticated integration of hardware
and software in the highly portable MessagePad format.

Byte magazine selected Newton technology, amongst other Apple products, to
receive a 1993 Byte Award of Excellence. Of the hundreds of new computing
products launched in 1993 only 15 received a Byte Award of Excellence.
Reseller Management magazine identified the Newton MessagePad as one of
the "Best-To-Sell Products of the Year'' in their 1993 Readers' Choice
Awards. The MessagePad was voted by the high-level executive readership to
be the "Most Innovative Product of the Year".

"These prestigious awards reflect the positive and enthusiastic responses
Newton technology has received from the computer industry, the market, and
the press," said Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of
Apple Computer's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) division. "The
Newton platform will continue to lead with innovative, effective and
intuitive products and technologies."

Apple's Newton MessagePad, a handheld communications assistant that allows
people to gather, manage, and share information through many
communications methods available today, was introduced in early August
1993, at the MacWorld Expo in Boston. The MessagePad shipped nationwide on
Labor Day, and was launched in the UK on September 16, 1993.

The Newton MessagePad offers a rich variety of communications options. The
Wireless Messaging Card and the Apple Wireless Messaging Service delivered
by MobileComm enable Newton customers in the United States to receive
wireless messages through the extensive paging network provided by
MobileComm, a subsidiary of BellSouth Corporation. The Newton Connection
kit v 1.00 (available for both Macintosh and Windows), which Apple shipped
earlier this year, enables information to be synchronized and updated
automatically between a Macintosh or a Windows-based personal computer and
the Newton MessagePad, when the two are connected. Apple recently shipped
the Newton Fax Modem Card, a compact and convenient credit-card sized
PCMCIA modem, which allows Newton customers to communicate via NewtonMail
as well as other online services, and send faxes anywhere. The NewtonMail
service, which enables Newton users to exchange text messages easily with
each other and anyone who can be reached through online services available
on the Internet, is currently available in a limited commercial release in
the United States. NewtonMail is expected to be available in a final
commercial release throughout the United States in January 1994.
