32-Bit Interleaved DRAM Graphics Accelerator Outperforms Popular
Two-Megabyte VRAM Cards at a Price That's $250 Less

LightSpeed VL for the VESA Local Bus Uses Interleaved DRAM to Double the
Performance of Standard DRAM Accelerator Cards

Richardson, Texas (November 15, 1993)--STB Systems, Inc., today announced
the release of a high-performance, 32-bit, interleaved DRAM graphics
accelerator for the VESA Local Bus interface. The LightSpeed VL graphics
accelerator outperforms popular two-megabyte VRAM cards, yet it has a
suggested retail price that is as much as $250 less. The LightSpeed VL
displays up to 16.7 million colors at non-interlaced resolutions as high
as 800-by-600 with a flicker-free 72-Hz refresh rate.

In tests conducted using the Winbench 3.1 benchmark test program, the
LightSpeed VL outperformed popular--and far more costly--two-megabyte VRAM
cards including the ATI Ultra Pro, Orchid Fahrenheit and Number Nine GXE
Level II. The LightSpeed VL scored more than 35 million Graphics Winmarks
in tests conducted by STB engineers.

"The LightSpeed VL accelerator delivers the same resolutions as the popular
Weitek P9000, and it provides much higher performance in high-color and
true-color modes," said Robert Hoskins, marketing communications manager
for STB. "Our use of interleaved DRAM provides twice the data throughput
of regular DRAM at half the cost of expensive VRAM."

Employing a design based on the Tseng W32P video controller chip and a
135-MHz, 16-bit data port RAMDAC, the LightSpeed VL has two megabytes of
interleaved 60-ns DRAM. The graphics accelerator can deliver a maximum of
16.7 million colors at resolutions of 640-by-480 and 800-by-600 with a
72-Hz refresh rate, 65K colors at 1024-by-768 (70-Hz) and 256 colors at
1280-by-1024 (70-Hz). These high-color and true-color modes are
appropriate for applications that utilize photo-realistic images and
require acceleration in Super VGA resolutions. A 60-Hz refresh rate also
is available.

Providing full hardware support for Bit-Block transfers (BitBlt),
line-drawing engines, polygon fills, hardware cursor and other
hardware-assist operations, the W32P video controller chip is compatible
with more DOS word processing and CAD/CAM drawing programs than any other
video chip on the market. STB ships the LightSpeed VL with a variety of
software-enhancement drivers including high-performance GUI drivers for
Windows 3. l, Windows NT, OS/2 2.1, NeXTStep, SCO Open Desktop, SunSoft
Solaris, Univell, AutoCAD display list, Lotus 1-2-3, Microsoft Word and
many other popular applications.

LightSpeed VL users can run all software written for the IBM VGA, IBM
8514-AI, STB Ergo-VGA, Tseng ET4000, Tseng W32 or VESA Super VGA standards
without special drivers or preloads. The W32P chip and its software
drivers are backward compatible with all Tseng ET4000-based video boards,
and they will work with any multiple-frequency monitor.

The LightSpeed VL incorporates a VESA-compatible feature connector that
supports the use of other add-in boards such as video overlay boards and
video capture boards.

Bundled Software Speeds Installation, Adds Versatility, Saves Power

STB supplies a variety of convenient utilities with the LightSpeed VL
graphics accelerator. Fast, easy, switchless installation is made possible
by a utility that installs hardware drivers on the hard drive and
automatically saves monitor configurations to non-volatile EEPROM.

AnyView is a set of versatile display-control utilities from Binar
Graphics, Inc., which allows users to switch screen resolution and make
other changes on the fly, eliminating the need to leave an application or
restart Windows. Under AnyView users can display an additional menu that
makes it possible to change resolution and color depth, switch back and
forth between resolutions, create a virtual desktop, create a bird's eye
view of the desktop in a small window, zoom in on an area of the screen,
and change the number of rows and columns a monitor will display. The user
can select any of these functions simply by clicking on a menu button.

Another utility, PowerStar, is a Display Power Management Software (DPMS)
package that meets VESA specifications for future generations of
power-saving monitors. PowerStar provides two power-reduction modes. One
mode puts a monitor in an inactive state, blanking the screen while
keeping the red/green/blue electron guns active and ready to fire. A
second, shut-down mode essentially turns the monitor off. Both modes are
controlled by a user interface that operates much like a screen saver. The
user determines the period of inactivity that activates each mode, and the
software powers up the monitor when activity resumes.

Volume Shipments Scheduled to Begin in Early December, 1993

STB plans to begin producing evaluation units of the LightSpeed VL later in
November; full production is scheduled to begin during the first week of
December, 1993, and shipments will begin during the second week of
December. The LightSpeed VL graphics accelerator has a suggested retail
price of $349.00.

In the first quarter of 1994 STB plans to begin shipping a PCI
2.0-compliant version of this accelerator, the LightSpeed PCI.

STB backs each of its products with a lifetime warranty and provides users
with toll-free technical support and a 24-hour BBS.

STB Systems, Inc., is recognized worldwide as a technology leader in the
design and manufacture of single- and multiple-channel video adapter
cards. STB supplies one of the industry's most complete lines of video
adapters and graphics accelerators. These products support both domestic
and international video standards.

Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Richardson, Texas, STB has established
a tradition of designing award-winning graphics controller boards and
writing specialized video drivers that provide maximum software
compatibility. STB estimates its annual revenues for the current fiscal
year will exceed $70 million.
