Gupta's New SQLConsole Product Enhances Ease-of-Use and Adds Functionality
to SQLBase Server

Chicago, Ill., December 9, 1993 -- Gupta Corporation (NASDAQ:GPTA) at
Database World today announced SQLConsole, a new powerful and graphical
database administration and monitoring tool for Gupta SQLBase Server.
Until now, sophisticated database administration tools and performance
monitors have been found only on mainframes and minicomputers and they
were difficult to learn and use. Gupta now brings this power to SQLBase
and the PC with SQLConsole in a graphical and new easy-to-use way.

As PC client/server databases proliferate in running business-critical
applications, corporate network administrators need a robust tool that
allows them to simplify and automate maintenance activities, optimize and
fine-tune system performance and trouble-shoot problems. SQLConsole
answers this need.

SQLConsole is designed to support the requirements of the corporate network
administrator. It provides an easy-to-use, graphical interface that
simplifies and automates common database administration tasks.
SQLConsole's Automated Maintenance Facility lets administrators perform
data and time-intensive operations when they cause the least disruption,
reducing system management cost and improving network performance.
SQLConsole's powerful monitoring capabilities provide information that has
previously been difficult or impossible to obtain. This information makes
it easier to optimize database and server performance, monitor the system
for bottlenecks and problems and quickly resolve problems when they do
occur. SQLConsole also prevents costly downtime by allowing users to
anticipate and react to problems before they occur. SQLConsole's Alarm
Facility notifies users when user-defined threshold values are exceeded.

SQLConsole similarly helps those organizations that do not have a
professional database administrator. SQLConsole's easy to use, graphical
interface empowers less sophisticated users and helps them perform
effective database administration. For example, SQLConsole's Automated
Maintenance Facility comes with a default recommended cycle to enforce
sound backup practices suitable for mission critical database servers.

SQLConsole also helps application developers debug and optimize their
systems. Typically, after an application is deployed the number of users
of the application increases, the amount of data increases and the
application is used in ways different than originally anticipated.
Problems may surface as the application is subjected to this increased
stress. SQLConsole helps developers test and fine-tune application
performance by providing them with a detailed view of what's happening on
the server behind the scenes. For example, many database problems result
from the improper use of cursors by front-end applications. SQLConsole can
identify and isolate concurrency problems produced by an application.

SQLConsole is the latest in a full line of Gupta PC products to bring
mainframe power and functionality to the PC desktop. In 1986 Gupta
introduced SQLBase, the first PC SQL database server. Most recently, Gupta
introduced TeamWindows, a collaborative programming component in
SQLWindows.

"SQLConsole is an important addition to the Gupta SQL System product line
by aiding our strategy to offer a complete PC client/server solution to
corporations building mission critical, enterprise-wide client/server
applications on PCs," said Umang P. Gupta, president and CEO, Gupta
Corporation.

SQLConsole is a new Gupta product based on SQLMonitor, a tool developed by
The Client/Server Factory (Toronto, Canada), a Gupta Independent Software
Vendor. Gupta acquired all the rights to SQLMonitor and worked with The
Client-Server Factory to add major new features.

Product Availability

SQLConsole is available as a standalone product and is priced at $595 in
the U.S. and Canada. Current SQLMonitor users may upgrade to SQLConsole
1.0 for $100. SQLConsole 1.0 will be available by December 31, 1993.
