Lotus and Gupta Partnership to Deliver Integration of SQL and Notes data

Gupta also taps Notes' collaborative capabilities to supplement team
programming features in SQLWindows

Menlo Park, Calif & Cambridge, Mass.--October 26, 1993 - Lotus Development
Corporation and Gupta Corporation today announced a joint effort to
provide a common interface for access to SQL and Notes data using Gupta
SQLWindows applications. When the Gupta products ship, Lotus Notes sites
will be able to conveniently use SQLWindows applications to query both
traditional structured DBMS data and the unstructured data commonly stored
by Notes. Structured data has been typically stored in fixed-field legacy
and relational databases ranging from Gupta SQLBase to Oracle to DB2,
while unstructured data includes freeform information such as text
documents, bitmaps and objects. Gupta will also link the workgroup
capabilities of Lotus Notes with the team programming features of Gupta's
market-leading client/server development tools.

The effort will result in a series of enhancements to SQLWindows, Gupta's
robust market-leading client/server development tool and Quest, Gupta's
end-user query tool. First, SQLWindows and Quest will be mail-enabled.
Applications developed with Gupta tools will be able to send, receive and
view mail messages as well as to distribute application modules using
Notes services. Mail enablement is expected during the first quarter of
1994 via a maintenance release of SQLWindows 4.1.

The next major releases of Gupta's tools, due during the second half of
1994, will fully support the Notes API (Application Programming
Interface). This will allow applications developed with SQLWindows to
readily read and write to Notes databases. Additionally, SQLWindows
developers will be able to use Notes as a storage and software
distribution system for the deployment of SQLWindows applications or their
components. Quest queries, forms, graphics and reports will also be able
to be stored directly into Notes databases. The goal of this project is to
make SQLWindows applications and Quest the preferred integrators of
structured and unstructured data by adding Notes to the existing databases
accessible by SQLWindows and Quest.

"Collaboration is a natural undertaking for Lotus and Gupta," said Jeff
Papows, vice-president of the Notes Division at Lotus. "Gupta's
market-leading support for team programming complements the collaborative
features present throughout Lotus' desktop products, including Notes.
We're pleased to be partnering with Gupta in an effort to further
integrate Lotus Notes with relational database information."

Added Umang Gupta, president of Gupta Corporation, "The rise of
unstructured data types made possible by products like Lotus Notes is a
fact of life for many corporate managers who rely on data analysis to tap
their department's or company's experience on a given matter. The
interests of our customers, and Gupta's long history as a leader in SQL
data management on PCs, make delivering integration of unstructured Notes
data with structured corporate data an imperative. By targeting Notes as
the leading repository of unstructured data, we'll also leverage the two
companies' respective contributions to collaborative and team computing."

The superior support for mobile users, repository basis and replication
facilities of Notes will greatly extend the abilities of SQLWindows to
support team practices for enterprise-wide client/server development
projects, particularly in cases where development team members are
scattered around the globe. In such a case, Notes is an excellent vehicle
for collaborative planning of SQLWindows applications, as well as the
means for capturing user feedback during beta evaluation and from
end-users of SQLWindows applications after deployment. As a delivery
vehicle for SQLWindows and Quest applications, Notes databases or mail
will be similarly useful for distributing finished applications anywhere
Notes users can access an appropriate Notes server.

Integration of unstructured Notes data with structured corporate data is a
major customer challenge. Gupta developers have already been called upon
to solve this problem, resulting in corporate projects where data
integration is achieved via Gupta applications. "This will save developers
a lot of work and improve the robustness of these types of applications,"
said Nick Burnard, Director of MIS for Lawson-Mardon Group, Bristol, UK.
"It's much better for Gupta and Lotus to solve this problem for us rather
than for every developer to create their own unique solution via the Notes
API."

Today's announcement is a direct result of Gupta's TIE (Tools Integration
for the Enterprise) strategy, announced in August. Gupta TIE defines the
interfaces to Gupta's core tools technology, which can be leveraged by
ISVs to mate Gupta tools and applications with complementary systems.
Previous agreements to leverage Gupta's TIE strategy include relationships
with CASE vendors to provide CASE integration and extension of Gupta's
database relationship with Novell into the tools arena to deliver
integration of Gupta products with AppWare.
