Duxbury Newsletter #19 (November 1993)

Big Announcements at Closing the Gap
by Don Breda

We'd like to thank all of you who helped to make Closing the Gap such a
successful show for us this year. For those of you who didn't make it or
who couldn't find us among the almost 150 exhibitors, we'd like to share
with you the announcements we made at that show....

The Update You've Been Waiting for--The Duxbury Braille Translator for the
IBM PC, the industry standard in braille translation, is being updated for
June 1994. The package will include a brand new speech friendly menu
system, on-the-fly formatting, dots-on-screen previewing, six-key editing,
grade 2 foreign language capabilities, user-friendly documentation, and
much, much more. All these features will be added without changing the
price. It's still just $495 for a new single user license, or $175 to
upgrade an existing license ! Registered users who purchase the Duxbury
Braille Translator before June will receive a free electronic update when
it becomes available.

Duxbury for Windows Coming Soon--The industry leaders in braille
translation are at it again! Shortly after the MS-DOS version is updated,
Duxbury will release a Windows version, including all the features of the
MSDOS version, and maybe even a few more.

Macintosh Version Update-Why stop with MS-DOS and Windows? After the
Windows release, Duxbury will overhaul the Macintosh version. By the end
of 1994, all three versions of Duxbury Translator will be nearly
identical. What could be more simple? Learn one and you'll know all three
versions.

(Release dates, prices and product specifications are as currently planned,
and are subject to change without notice.)

FREE UPDATES
By Joe Sullivan

If the title of this article makes you perk up, it's for a good reason. For
one year after your initial purchase or paid update, electronic updates
are free. We've been told time and again that it hurts to purchase
software which becomes "old" within a few months. We don't want our
customers to suffer from the post purchase stress that can result from
spending good money on rapidly changing high technology products.

The easiest way to get free updates is to use our Bulletin Board System
(BBS). See newsletter 18 for details. For those of you who don't have a
modem, or who don't know a BBS from the BBC, we will update your disks one
time at no charge within a year of your purchase. Simply send us your
original Duxbury disks by mail, and we'll refresh them with the latest
software. All subsequent disk refreshments within the year are subject to
a service and postage charge of $10, which must be prepaid.

This free update policy applies only to registered customers who either
purchased a new license or paid for an update within the past year. Free
updates are not available to unregistered customers. To keep things simple
and fair, one year is measured from the time the software leaves our
office. In cases where the software was purchased from a dealer's stock,
we must receive a packing list or invoice stating the later shipping
date.

Affordable Site Licenses
by Matt Sullivan

Did you know that for less than the price of an entry level braille
embosser you can install Duxbury on every computer in your office? If you
work in a multiple user environment, you should definitely consider a site
license. A site license permits an unlimited number of users employed by
one organization to operate the software in one geographical location
(e.g. a building or campus). Before long, we may join most of the software
industry in changing to a per-user license fee for multiple-user
environments. Even if you don't have five or more users now, you may want
to plan for the future and purchase this extremely flexible license plan
while it lasts.

If the licensing flexibility isn't incentive enough, we'll even give you
full credit towards a site license for each single-user license you wish
to trade up. For example, if you own two single-user licenses of DUXWP,
we'll apply $590 towards the purchase of a DUXWP site license, making your
price $885 instead of the list price of $1475. The minimum price for a new
site license is the cost of a site license upgrade, or $495 using the
DUXWP example.

Our price list appears on the last page of this newsletter. Note that site
licenses are priced at five times that of a single-user license. If you
are familiar with the software industry, you've probably noticed already
that our site licenses are more affordable than single user licenses of
most other highly specialized software packages.

WordPerfect 6 Bridge Coming Soon
by Peter Sullivan

We've received many inquiries about braille translation from WordPerfect's
new version 6.0 for DOS . With the developer's toolkit in hand we can now
plunge into the project. We hope to release a direct bridge by the end of
1993. Until then, if you are using WordPerfect 6.0, simply save your
document in the WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 file format for translation.

DUXWP can translate these files, but it will first give a non-critical
error message about not having font information. Unfortunately this can't
be corrected because WordPerfect changed the printer driver mechanism and
can't export this information to its older file formats. DUXWP will work
fine with the exported file, except that font dependent functions, such as
transcribing Courier to CBC, will not be available.

Some users have reported locking up in DUXWP's File, Open dialog when a
directory contains WordPerfect 6.0 files. To prevent this problem, we
recommend that you keep a separate directory for files saved as
WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 for translation. The update to permit translation from
WordPerfect 6.0 will fix this problem. The update price is $99, or free
for recent customers--see the article by Joe Sullivan.

Our Products and Services

The following is a summary of our principal products and prices. As many of
you know, we work with many braille codes and grade 2 languages (e.g.
Arabic and Swahili) and operating environments other than those listed.
Please contact us for details on additional products and prices. All
products, unless otherwise indicated, are sold as a single-user license.
Although not explicitly listed, every product has a corresponding "site
license" (unlimited users at one location) at a price of five times that
of the single-user equivalent. Our products generally require a hard disk
for convenient operation. Documentation and operating language for all
software obtained directly from us is in English; contact us regarding
suppliers of versions that operate in other languages. All products carry
a full 90-day satisfaction guarantee.

All orders must be prepaid in US$ by check, money order, Discover, Visa or
MasterCard, or shipped COD, unless received from a government agency or an
existing customer with a credit application on file. Massachusetts
customers please add 5% sales tax or supply exemption form. Shipping is
free only for ground shipments to North American destinations. For
overseas and faster shipping methods, please call for a quote.
