New Application Note Explains How to Perform Block Data Transfers Between
GPIB Controllers and VXI-bus Instruments

December 17, 1993 - Austin, TX - The new National Instruments application
note, "VXI Block Data Transfers and Register-Based Device Programming
Using the GPIB-VXI," discusses the methods for transferring data between
GPIB controllers and VXI-bus instruments linked by GPIB-VXI interface
kits.

The application note teaches users how to program nonmessage-based
instruments as well as how to perform block data transfers between
external stand-alone computers and the VXI-bus using the National
Instruments C-size Slot 0 module, the GPIB-VXI. Many commercially
available GPIB-to-VXI command modules cannot easily perform simple VXI-bus
data transfers because their primary function is message translation -
converting GPIB protocol to Word Serial Protocol for message-based
devices. The note explains how to use the GPIB-VXI local command set and
DMAmove Code Instrument (CI) to transfer data to, from, or across the VXI
backplane without any instrument-dependent commands. These methods are
readily available, easy to use, and do not require extensive software
development. The first part of this application note covers the GPIB-VXI
local command set and the last section describes the DMAmove CI. Both
sections contain background information on each method as well as an
illustrative example of each procedure.
