Two Apple Technologies Awarded "Best of Comdex" Honors by Byte Magazine

Apple's Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS Compatible Wins "Best System"; FireWire
Named "Most Significant Technology"

CUPERTINO, California--November 24, 1993--Byte Magazine has awarded Apple
Computer, Inc.'s Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS Compatible and FireWire
technologies top honors at Comdex/Fall. Byte distributes its coveted "Best
of Comdex" awards to companies demonstrating outstanding new technology at
Comdex, the largest computer tradeshow in the U.S.

Apple's Macintosh Quadra 61(), DOS Compatible won First place in the "Best
System" category. On Nov. 15 during Comdex, Apple announced its plans to
develop the Macintosh Quadra computer with MS-DOS- and
Windows-compatibility. Packed with the powerful Motorola 68LC040 and
Intel486 SX microprocessors, the Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS Compatible
version computer is being designed to enable users to run Macintosh, DOS
and Windows applications. Other finalists included NEC Technologies'
Express RISC server and Digital Equipment Corporation's DEC pc XL Series.

Byte's "Most Significant Technology" Award went to Apple and Texas
Instruments (TI) for leading the development of the P1394 High-Speed
Serial Bus. The FireWire technology, Apple's implementation of the P1394
standard, has been licensed by TI and NCR. FireWire, which uses low-cost
cabling and simple connectors, will enable a dramatic reduction in the
number of connectors required, improves overall performance and allows
"plug-and-play" addition of peripherals. Other finalists in the category
included Micropol by VRex, a practical 3-D display technology, and
Intergraph's Raven, a hardware/software combination designed to bring
high-speed audio and video capabilities to Windows NT.

"Technology leadership has long been a benefit customers expect from
Apple," said Ian Diery, executive vice president of Apple's personal
computer division. "It is fitting that the Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS
Compatible and FireWire, two new technologies from Apple that provide
multiple-platform capabilities, were awarded top honors at Comdex, a show
traditionally associated with DOS and Windows users. These technologies
underscore Apple's commitment to fit in and stand out."

Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS Compatible: Best System Award

The Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS Compatible computer, which is planned to be
preinstalled with MS-DOS 6.2, is being designed to provide users with
multiple-platform options and protect their current investment in
software. Apple's goal is to deliver a product that is ideally suited for
home office users and small businesses with cross-platform computing
needs. At the touch of two keys, users will be able to switch from the
Macintosh computer environment to DOS and back again.

The Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS Compatible computer is being designed to
feature a 25 MHz 68LC040, powering the Macintosh computer environment, and
a 25 MHZ Intel486 SX, which runs DOS or Windows-based software. Because
the dual processors will work independently, users will be able to run
Macintosh and DOS or Windows' applications in tandem and even cut and
paste data between the two environments. Comparable in cost to most
Macintosh or DOS only systems today, the Macintosh Quadra 610, DOS
Compatible version is expected to be priced at a U.S. ApplePrice of less
than $500 over the Quadra 610 model. Apple will provide specific pricing
and availability information when the product is completed and ready for
release.

FireWire: Most Significant Technology Award

FireWire, designed to meet both the speed and distance requirements of
peripheral input/output (I/O), was created by Apple and led to IEEE's
development of the P1394 High-Speed Serial Bus standard. TI, also
recognized by Byte for delivering the first FireWire silicon, serves on
the IEEE committee with Apple, Adaptec, International Business Machines
(IBM), Maxtor, NCR and Western Digital. Both TI and NCR have announced
plans to develop chips based on the FireWire technology, and Apple is
working with other companies to adopt this industry standard connection
for the digital world.
