README
updated 05 April 1993

                               STEIS
		STScI Electronic Information Service

STEIS is a suite of electronic information systems based on an anonymous
ftp account which contains information about the Hubble Space Telescope
and the Space Telescope Science Institute. One can tranfer files via ftp
and gopher, or automatically receive selected files by subscribing to
the stsci listserver account. Instructions for using the listserver
account are below the directory listing in this file.

Instructions for using gopher can be found in the main directory in the
file .FTP_USERS_READ_THIS

  To access STEIS, type:

$ ftp stsci.edu
ftp> user anonymous
password: (enter your last name or userid)

Anyone may login, and in order to preserve computer security,
usable commands are restricted. The main result is that users must download
to their host computers the files they wish to read/use, temporarily
returning to the host computer with the aid of the "spawn" command or
by logging out of STEIS altogether ("bye").
Note that there are slight differences between the login sequence under
UNIX and VMS. UNIX will prompt for name.

cd <directory> move into the named subdirectory (e.g., "cd stsci").
cd .. move up one directory level (can be used serially cd ../..).
ls (-Fl) list the names of the files in the current directory,
the optional -F flag puts a "/" beside directories.
the -l flag gives a long listing including the time of last
		  posting.
show-directory shows which (sub)directory the user is "in". An alternative
		  command is "pwd".
dir a long directory listing of the current directory
(includes file sizes in bytes - similar to "ls -l").
get <filename> download the named file into the local computer.
mget * gets every file in a directory (the wildcard * allows the
user to avoid typing lenghty filenames).
binary enable binary mode for transferring non-ASCII files.
ascii enable ascii mode for transferring ASCII files (NOTE:
this is the default transfer mode).
? lists available commands.
help <command> explains commands available in ftp.
bye/quit log out of STEIS.

Remember that filenames are case sensitive. For more information, consult your
system documentation and/or your local system administrator. Assistance with
STEIS can be obtained by sending mail to usb@stsci.edu.

Helpful Hint: The following commands allow a user to read a file while still
within STEIS. They have been tested on VMS and UNIX while using a MultiNet
FTP facility but, as they depend on the user's host system and its FTP
facility, they may not work for all users.

1) "get" the file you wish to read
2) spawn a process: this is done by typing "spawn" when using VMS or "]" when
using UNIX. You should get your system prompt back, allowing you to look at the
file using your favorite text editor.
3) to return to STEIS, simply "logout" from that process...the stsci.edu>
prompt should return. (If you have windows capability, open a window to
examine files transferred).

Emacs users can copy the files called *ange* in stsci/steis to use the dired command in browsing STEIS.

Below is an overview of the STEIS directory structure and contents.
For a more complete listing, see the file complete.dir in the main directory.

--------------------- --------
README
new_items - a file pointing out what's been posted over the last week &
where to find it. The README file will also be updated, but
new_items is intended to provide a 'quick look' at what's
	    changed since your last login

instrument_news contains the abstracts of the most recent
instrument reports written by the instrument
scientists, describing new techniques for data
reduction and instrument use. A subdirectory
exists for each instrument. There are files on
			      the usenet newsgroup sci.astro.hubble and
                              calibration status.

There is a new subdirectory with orbital
                              parameter information.

                Using Listserver with STEIS Files

Users can subscribe to certain popular files, which will be e-mailed
automatically whenever they're updated. It is also possible to request
items from the archive of previous files. The list of available files
will expand with time to include other frequently accessed ascii files.
Please send any requests for additional files you would like to see made
available through listserver to usb@stsci.edu.

Files currently available for subsciption are:

             filename description
lrp - lists observations for the coming year
timeline - detailed weekly schedule of observations
	hst-status - daily activity/instrument status reports
completed-observations - list of all observations completed to date
wfpc-psf-library	- point spread functions for wfpc
wfpc-delta-flats - delta flat field information for wfpc

To subscribe to a listserver file, send a message with a blank subject
line to listserv@stsci.edu and the following text:

		subscribe file name Your Name

where file name is one of the above file names and Your Name
represents the user's full name. Your return email address is copied
from this message and added to the list of subscribers. To
unsubscribe from a list, just replace subscribe with unsubscribe in
the above message.

For a quick overview of commands, send a message with a blank
subject line to the same email address but with the word HELP as
