 HIGHLIGHTS

CATALOGS - GDS effortlessly creates catalog screens. Once the screens are
saved, you can click on thumbnails and see the original files from within
GDS. No wonder everyone seems to use GDS for their heavy cataloging!

FAST VIEWING - GDS is faster than most viewers. GDS's interface was designed
in an environment where ease of use and speed are critical. Even when the
hardware can't handle the raw picture, GDS instantly converts the image on
the fly, allowing you to see what most viewers would display poorly.

FORMAT CONVERSION - GDS can convert just about any format to just about any
other format. Just select the file(s) and choose the destination format
from the conversion menu. In seconds, your file(s) are complete. Some
have called GDS "the DOS DeBabbelizer," however, the 24 to 8 bit color
reduction in GDS is the cleanest in the industry.

SLIDE SHOWS - GDS makes slide shows a snap. Just select the pictures you
want, click once in the lower right of the screen, and GDS is off with
a slide show. Giving a presentation? No problem, just use the arrow
keys to move through the pictures if your presentation timing gets
delayed! (The left arrow will go to the previous picture!)

 WHO USES GDS?

Hundreds of thousands of copies of GDS have circulated since February 1991,
when GDS became the premier graphics file viewer and catalog system for
PC's. CompuServe invented GIF, and uses GDS to catalog all of their online
image files. CompuServe's system operators choose GDS as their "first
choice" for cataloging files because GDS is fast, easy and reliable.

Tens of thousands of people around the world are using GDS. Among them
are some of the most reputable companies in the world. These companies
include: Microsoft, IBM, Intel, National Geographic, The Smithsonian
Institute, CompuServe, Epson, Sony, Hewlett Packard, Microtek, US Dept.
of Defense, US Dept. of Energy, Mobil, AutoDesk, Hercules Graphics,
Digital Vision, and more. The list is growing ever faster, every day.

 WHY PAY FOR SHAREWARE?

Shareware is a way for you to "try before you buy". It is not "free" or
"public domain". It is not software you should quietly avoid purchasing.
Good shareware, like good commercial software, is very expensive to produce
and requires developers with years of experience. The reason shareware is
less expensive is that very little is spent on "mass-marketing". This
allows the shareware publishers to offer you more software for your money.
Shareware helps you make the best decision about which product to buy. So
please help us support good shareware, and register the enhanced version
   of GDS.

Becoming a registered user gets you on the list of people we notify of
new updates and other product information. Once you buy the enhanced
version of GDS, you will become one of the many thousands of satisfied GDS
   users who use GDS regularly.

 PICTURE FACTORY INFORMATION

Picture Factory(tm) is a product for Macintosh and IBM computers which comes
on one CD-ROM disc, and contains 2,659 photographs -- ready to use for just
about any application. Please specify Macintosh or IBM version when ordering.
Mention that you saw it in GDS version 3, and get 10%% off!

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to use Picture Factory. It comes with
Photodex's trademarked ClickSearch(tm) browser, which is incredibly easy to
use. Just type in what you are looking for, and Picture Factory instantly
responds by showing all of the relevant pictures in the database!

And it's smart, too! The ClickSearch browser makes searching a snap. You no
longer have to fight the software to find what you're after! Just type it in,
and ClickSearch analyzes the entire language to find pictures for you. After
using ClickSearch for just a few minutes, you'll agree that the search engine
is a very powerful tool indeed.

Pictures all fit roughly within a 640x480 frame. These pictures are not
suitable for very high-end advertising purposes, but are fantastic for quick
jobs which will be 4x5" or smaller. Using the pictures larger still looks
great, but is not going to be photographic quality at that size.

NOTE: Picture Factory is a proprietary, high performance image delivery
system, and is not designed to be compatible with GDS. All images are stored
in a special format, which no general purpose viewer (including GDS) can read.
However, any pictures exported from the DOS version of Picture Factory can be
used by GDS and other software immediately.

 CREATING CATALOGS

 1) Select all files by clicking on the first file in the file list and
dragging the mouse to the end of the file list. You can also create a
catalog of any combination of files. You can hold down the <Shift> key
while using the mouse to add and subtract files from being selected.
Also, if no files are selected, GDS will catalog every file.

 2) Next, select "Create Catalog" from the "View" menu. Use the "up" and
"down" arrow keys to increase or decrease the number of thumbnails
    displayed on the screen.

 3) Make sure the "Borders" and "Labels" options are set as you want them.
Type "L" and "B" to change them, or use the mouse and click on the
    "Labels" and "Borders" buttons.

 4) Press [Enter] to start generating the first screen.

 5) When each screen is done, press <Alt-W> or <Alt-J> to write the screen
out as a GDS catalog .GIF or .JPG file. GDS names the files sequentially
    like GDS000.GIF, GDS001.GIF, GDS002.GIF, unless you've used the "/N<name>"
command line option (see "COMMAND LINE OPTIONS" below.)

*SPECIAL NOTE: If you want to write all remaining catalog screens in one
batch, you can use <Ctrl-W> or <Ctrl-J> rather than <Alt-W> or <Alt-J>.

 6) You can print the catalog image by pressing 'P' at the prompt after each
catalog screen is completed. If you do, GDS prints the catalog image and
then returns you to the prompt again, in case you want to save the file or
exit. GDS printouts support Hewlett Packard LaserJet II, 3, 4 and
compatible printers (also see the /#LPT command line option for printer
configuration information; the printer must be configured properly).

 7) You're done. When you look at the GIF or JPG files, you will be able to
click on a picture to see the original, as long as the original file is
in the current file list. You can also use <PgUp> and <PgDn> to move
through multiple screen catalogs while viewing the catalogs.

HELPFUL HINTS
-------------
Some users like to generate catalogs with a black background, rather than a
white one. White backgrounds are the default mode for GDS, and are great for
printing catalogs. If you do need to use a black background, you can toggle
the "White Catalog Backgnd" option in the "View" menu.

If you have to catalog a large number of images, you can use the /W<n> command
line option to tell GDS to automatically write catalog images. Here's how it
works:

  1) Start GDS with the /W<n> option. The "<n>" is the first file number, for
example, /W4 would write the first catalog as GDS004.GIF.

  2) Use GDS to create the first catalog screen (as described at the top of
     this document).

  3) When GDS is done creating the catalog, type <Alt-W> to write the image as
a GIF file and continue making catalog screens. From this point on, GDS
will automatically write successive catalog screens to GIF files.

This process can also be automated from the command line, by using the /P
option. Just specify the path/file specification of the files to be cataloged
and include the /P<n> and /W<n> options. The "/P" option sets the number
thumbnail tiles across for the catalog screens. For example, /P4 would
create catalog screens with four thumbnails across, and probably four high.

If you create catalogs from the DOS prompt, you can control the labelling,
borders, and background color as well:

/L0 - Disable thumbnail labels (/L1 enables them)
/U0 - Disable thumbnail borders (/U1 enables them)
/~A0 - Use black background for catalog screens (/~A1 uses white)

/O<n> - Set sort flag for slideshow (0=no sort, 1=sort files)

/OK - Assume CONFIG file is correct and use it. Note: this switch avoids
GDS's automatic re-configuration of video hardware. If you have a
video card which arbitrarily changes it's own video BIOS contents,
then put this switch in your GDSUSER.CFG as follows:

auto,/ok ;assume CONFIG is ok to use

/P<n> - Automatically generate catalogs and write as GIF's (unless /~Tx is
          specified).

/Z<n> - Set slideshow delay in 100ths of seconds: Default is 300 (3 seconds)

/#<lpt#:> - Set filename of printer device (ie: /#LPT2 ; default is /#PRN)
NOTE: The printer must be configured correctly to avoid the annoying
          error messages.

 /=<bn> - Set default red/green/blue/contrast/brightness/color/sharpness
            /=R<n> - Default red level (+/- 255)
            /=G<n> - Default green level
            /=B<n> - Default blue level
            /=C<n> - Default contrast (+/- 255)
            /=+<n> - Default brightness (+/- 255)
            /=L<n> - Default color level (+/- 255)
            /=S<n> - Default 24 bit sharpening level (0-10+)
            /=H<n> - Default hue setting (0-255)

/~A<n> - Use white backgrounds for catalogs. Default is white (1).

/~B<n> - Turn off automatic centering of slideshows. (Default=1).
To turn off centering, use /~B0

/~E<n> - Inhibit slideshow screen erase between similar images (FASTER)

/~F<n> - Enable color proximity elimination in color reduction

 /~G<n> - Generate optimized grayscale palettes (G1, default=G0)

/~J<n> - Print in COLOR. HP PCL CMY process inkjet printers supported.

/~K<n> - Replace 'TGA' file extensions with 'JPG' during array generation.
(This is obsolete as of GDS v3.1, but it still works.)

/~L<n> - Set initial length of dynamic file list cache size for GDS. The
maximum number of files GDS can handle is 2848. The default for
this option is 200. You may save a very small amount of RAM by
setting this number lower if you use GDS with fewer than 150 files
at a time. Setting this number to 50 will save 3450 bytes of RAM.
As the file list grows, GDS may run out of memory, which will stop
GDS from adding valid files to the file list. This should not
happen unless GDS is trying to deal with thousands of files. Paths
are handled separately and there is no practical limit to the
number of concurrent paths GDS can handle.

/~M<n> - Set default JPEG quality level (default=75) Available in registered
          versions only.

/~O<n> - Set default file sort mode (0=name/1=size/2=bits/3=res/4=extn)

/~R<n> - Force aspect ratio of all catalog files to 1:1

/~TJ - Use JPEG format for automatically written catalogs (with /P above).
NOTE: Any 'write command' letter can be used here. For example,
Since <Alt-T> writes TIFF files, /~TT would write TIFF catalogs,
/~TG would write GIF catalogs, etc.)

/~Z<n> - Always try to write new files to startup path

/<vid> - Set video chipset support (see GDS.CFG file for list of names)

/512 - Assume video card has at least 512K

/1M - Assume video card has enough memory for any video mode

@<file> - Read file list from text file: <file> (ie: GDS @file.lst )

 CONVERTING FILES

    FROM THE FILE-LIST SCREEN

 1) Select a file (or a group of files) to convert. You can select multiple
files by clicking and holding the mouse button while dragging the pointer
over a number of files. You can also select multiple ranges by holding
down [Shift] while clicking on file names to select or deselect them.

NOTE: The trial version will not do "batch conversions," it will only
convert one file at a time.

 2) Pull down the "Convert" menu with the mouse (or type ALT-C)
and select the desired type of file.

 3) GDS will open a dialog box that allows you to ROTATE the image or MIRROR
(flip) it vertically or horizontally as it writes out the file. GDS will
attempt to name the file the same as the source but with the new
extension. If the extension is the same, or a file with the name already
exists, GDS will name the file GDS<n> where <n> is the next available
    number, i.e. GDS000, GDS001, GDS002...

    FROM THE VIEW SCREEN

 1) (OPTIONAL) To save a portion of the displayed image: move the mouse
pointer to the "File" menu and highlight "Set Save Rect". Release the
mouse button. Move the mouse pointer to one corner of the rectangular
area you want to save. Click and hold the mouse button. Drag the
rectangle that appears to the desired size. Release the mouse button.
Only the area inside the rectangle will be saved by following the
remaining steps. (If you are unhappy with your selection you can return
the crop rectangle to include the entire screen by selecting "Reset Crop
    Rectangle" from the "File" menu.)

 2) Move the mouse pointer to the top of the view screen. Click and hold the
mouse button. The "View Mode Menu Bar" will appear.

 3) Move the mouse pointer to the "File" menu.

 4) Highlight the type of destination file by moving the mouse pointer to it
    and releasing the button.

 5) GDS will open a dialog box to name the file. If the name GDS picks is
acceptable, hit [Enter]. Otherwise change the name and hit [Enter]. GDS
displays a warning message if you try to use a name that already exists.

                           GDS VIDEO CONFIGURATION

          Ŀ
                           PRESS [Enter] TO START.
Press 'Y' after each beep if the test screen looks OK.
Press 'N' if it does not.

                           IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE, READ
                             THE INFORMATION BELOW.

(Use the arrow keys or the
mouse to move up and down.)

The following procedure automatically configures GDS to run with your system.
If you have trouble, call (510)449-9079 for technical assistance.

                       QUICK START FOR IMPATIENT USERS:
                       --------------------------------
  1) DO NOT just hit [Esc] to exit the configuration so you can run GDS. Go
through the configuration like a normal human, and you'll be happier.
  2) Don't assume the machine is crashed until you've waited for at least
20 seconds without hearing a beep. Some video cards take a long time.
  3) If GDS beeps, that means a test pattern was drawn, even if you can't
see it properly. Press 'Y' to accept the mode, 'N' to kill it.
  4) If you determine that the machine is crashing after you type 'Y' to
approve a certain mode, see "*** CRASHING MODES ***" below.
  5) If you are not getting all of the modes you think you should be getting,
GDS is probably unable to detect the video card properly. Try /VESA on
the command line, and if that doesn't work, call.

QUICK NOTE: If you have a VESA compatible SVGA and GDS doesn't recognize all
of the modes the card is supposed to support, delete the file called "CONFIG"
and run GDS again by specifying '/VESA' on the command line (Type: GDS /VESA).

                                 INSTRUCTIONS
                                 ------------
GDS analyzes each mode to determine if it is valid. YOU MAY SEE THE SCREEN
GO CRAZY, which MAY be normal. Allow 10-15 seconds delay before assuming that
the machine is crashed. We have seen video cards take up to 30 seconds to
respond correctly with a video mode.

Once GDS has determined that a mode seems OK, GDS draws a test pattern on the
screen and beeps once. If the screen looks OK, then press 'Y'. When you
press 'Y', GDS will immediately continue on to the next mode. Repeat this
process until GDS prompts you (in text mode) to save the configuration.

IF YOU HEAR A BEEP BUT DON'T SEE A GOOD TEST PATTERN, PRESS 'N'. When you
press 'N', GDS should immediately change the state of the video system, which
you should be able to notice. If you do not notice a change within 20
seconds, reset your machine.

Many video monitors cannot support certain modes because of their high
frequency scan rates. This type of incompatibility is very common, and is
nothing to be worried about. If GDS tries to set a mode that your monitor
does not support, the screen may flicker, quickly shear and scroll in various
directions, flash on and off, and generally look very bad. If this happens,
wait for the beep, and just press 'N'. If the beep does not come within 30
seconds, follow the instructions to manually omit the mode below under
"*** CRASHING MODES ***" below.

                           REPEATED CONFIGURATIONS
                           -----------------------
                               (Video Deja Vu)

If GDS keeps putting you through the configuration every time you run GDS,
then remove the semicolon (';') before the following line in the GDSUSER.CFG
file:

auto,/ok ;assume CONFIG file is ok

GDS checks the very beginning of the video BIOS to determine if the video
hardware has changed, so it can automatically reconfigure the video mode
support when you change computers. Some very recent video cards change the
contents of the video BIOS, which tricks GDS into thinking they are a new
video card. The "/OK" switch prevents GDS from automatically reconfiguring
the video modes because of a video BIOS change.

                           *** CRASHING MODES ***

If GDS crashes immediately after pressing [Enter] from this text screen,
try using the /LAPTOP command line parameter when running GDS. If this does
not solve the problem, call (510)449-9079 for more information.

If the machine locks up after pressing 'Y' after a good mode, go through the
following steps to omit the mode manually:

  1) Start GDS again, and remember the screen resolution (displayed at the
upper left of each screen). When the machine locks up again, you'll
now remember what mode came just before it. Reset the machine again.

  2) Start GDS again, and go through the modes until you get to the mode
just before where the machine locked up in step 1. Press [Enter] for
this mode rather than 'Y'. GDS will switch to text mode and display
a window in the middle of the screen.

  3) Press 'Y'. GDS will redo the text window to display the resolution of
the mode which is locking up the machine.

  4) Press 'N' to kill the mode which is locking the machine. Now GDS should
redo the text window to display the mode AFTER the mode which was
locking up the machine. At this point, it may be OK to press [Enter],
which will put you back into the graphics 'Y'/'N' process again. If
this locks up the machine again, then keep repeating steps 2-4 but keep
manually killing each mode that you know locks up the machine.

NOTE: To print this file, copy GDSMODE.TXT to your printer. Your printer's
port name may be PRN, LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3 depending on your machine's setup.
For example, if you printer is PRN, then use the following command line:

     COPY GDSMODE.TXT PRN

Fortunately, you should only have to get all of the way through this
configuration process once, and then GDS will save the information so you
won't have to do it again.

 CREATING SLIDE SHOWS

SIMPLE SLIDESHOW: 1) Use the mouse to select the files you want to show.
Notice when you hold down the shift key, you can click
on files to toggle their selection state. This makes it
easy to select exactly the files you want.

                  2) Click on the box in the lower right corner of the GDS
file display area labelled "Click Here For Slide Show!".

                  3) You can change the delay in the slideshow by using the
/Z<n> option at the command line (see "COMMAND LINE
                      OPTIONS" below.)

COMMAND LINE SLIDE
SHOW FROM DOS: Type "GDS /S" followed by filenames and perhaps some of the
                  following options:

                     /E1 - Fit images /O0 - Don't sort

/X - Exit in graphics mode /Z<n> - Set image delay

For example, to do a slideshow of all of the files in the
C:\PICS directory with two seconds between them, type the
                  following command:

                     C> GDS /S C:\PICS /Z20

:::GDSVID.TXT
 VIDEO INFORMATION

GDS supports four types of graphics modes: standard video modes, tweeked VGA
modes, VESA modes and other non-standard modes. Standard modes work on all
VGA cards. Many video provide VESA support, although we have NEVER seen a
complete VESA implementation, and some video cards require the user to load
VESA drivers in order to actually use the modes. Most VESA cards work well
enough for GDS to be able to reliably detect and support the available video
modes.

If you have a VESA video card and GDS is not recognizing one or more of the
video modes that the card is supposed to be able to support, you may need to
load a VESA driver. In particular, Diamond video cards seem to have the most
problems with graphics software, including programs like CSHOW.

You can usually get a VESA driver from your video card or computer
manufacturer. Many video cards include a software program which supports
VESA when the video card does not support VESA by itself.

If you have a Diamond video card, you need to "enable" the VESA support:

If you have a Diamond VIPER, try putting the following command in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

     vprmode VESA

If you have a Diamond Stealth, try putting the following command in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

     stlmode VESA

There are several VESA drivers available on local BBS systems, CompuServe,
America Online and GEnie, such as UniVESA (UVBE*.ZIP). UniVESA has been
reported to us to cause incomplete VESA support and some compatibility
problems after running Windows with some video cards. We have been unable
to determine the extent of UniVESA's support except that it works well for
some video systems.

  Standard Modes:
  ---------------
  Hercules 720x348 (Monochrome)
  CGA 640x200 (Monochrome)
           320x200 (4 color)
  EGA 320x200, 640x200, 640x350 (16 color)
  VGA 640x480 (Monochrome)
           640x480 (16 color)
           320x200 (256 color)

  Tweeked VGA Modes:
  ------------------
  VGA 320x240, 320x400, 360x480 (256 color)

  VESA Modes
  ----------
  VESA 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (16 color)
           640x400, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (256 color)
           320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (32768 colors)
           320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (65536 colors)
           320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (16 million colors)

  Other Non-Standard Modes:
  -------------------------
These modes occur on video cards that are detected to have specific support
capabilities, and the list is really long. If you are interested, please
refer to the GDS.CFG file, which should give you A LOT of information about
  video modes.

                              RECONFIGURING GDS
                              -----------------
If you have already configured GDS and saved the config file, but you want to
do it all over again, delete the file called "CONFIG".

                           DO *NOT* DELETE GDS.CFG

Deleting GDS.CFG would make it impossible for GDS to configure itself, which
would be a bad thing. There is no way to "add" modes to GDS once it has
been configured. The only way "add" modes is to delete the file called CONFIG
and running GDS again, which reconfigures GDS completely.

                          FORCING GDS VIDEO SUPPORT
                          -------------------------
LAPTOPS: Some laptops crash when GDS tries to bring up the configuration
because of incompatibility with very old CGA and EGA modes. If you have a
laptop, try using the following switches:

/LAPTOP Disable Herc, CGA and EGA (same as /NOHERC /NOCGA /NOEGA)

  /NOHERC Disable Hercules monochrome mode
  /NOCGA Disable all CGA modes
  /NOEGA Disable all EGA modes

If you're a power user and don't like monochrome modes, you can disable them
from your "MANLY" machine by using the following switch:

  /NOMONO Disable monochrome modes

Even though GDS does a fairly complete job of automatically detecting the
available video hardware, you can force GDS to assume it has a specific
display type with one of the following command line parameters. (You can also
put any command line option into GDSUSER.CFG by prefacing it with "auto,".)

  /HERC Hercules monochrome only
  /CGA IBM CGA only
/EGA IBM EGA (+CGA modes supported by EGA)
/VGA IBM VGA (+CGA/EGA modes supported by VGA)
  /AHEAD Ahead systems 'A' chipset
  /AHEADB Ahead systems 'B' chipset
  /ATI ATI VGA Wonder
  /CHIPS Chips & Technologies
  /CIRRUS Cirrus Logic 510 & 520 (MaxLogic MaxVGA's)
  /CL54 Cirrus Logic (54xx series, newer SVGA's)
  /EVEREX Everex SVGA's
/EV634 Everex EV634 card (very specific)
  /F120 Orchid Farenheit 1280
  /GENOA Genoa 6000 series (6x00)
  /OAK Oak Technologies
  /PARA Paradise (Western Digital chipsets)
  /SS24X Diamond Speedstar 24X (*NOT* Speedstar 24!)
  /STEALTH Diamond Stealth VRAM
  /STPRO Diamond Stealth PRO
/TRIDNT Trident VGA's (ATI Prism, Everex Viewpoint SVGA)
  /TSENG Tseng Laboratories ET-3000 chipsets
  /TSENG4 Tseng Laboratories ET-4000 chipsets
/VESA Full VESA support (minimal detection to avoid crashes)
/VID7 Video 7 (VEGA Deluxe, 1024i, VRAM VGA)

If you get really confused, try the following command line option:

  /NOIDEA Invoke "really confused" mode.

                                 MORAL
                                 -----
GDS provides a fairly easy way to use about a bazillion different combinations
of hardware, software, computers, file formats and other stuff. With some
configurations, there will be problems. Problems involving direct support of
non-standardish technical things (like video systems) can be very strange. If
you do have a problem with your video, we can try (*TRY*) to help.

However, if you are running this copy of GDS 3.x in a DOS box under Windows,
you're on your own. If you get it to work completely, YOU'RE A STUD, and you
should call us to earn your "Official GDS Bragging Rights"...

 HIGHLIGHTS

CATALOGS - GDS painlessly creates catalog GIF and JPEG images of even the
most disorganized computers. Once the GIF files are saved, you can click
on thumbnails and see the large version from within GDS. The Smithsonian
Institute and CompuServe have been using GDS for years.

FAST VIEWING - GDS is far faster than most viewers. GDS's interface was
designed in an environment where ease of use and speed were critical.
Even when the hardware can't handle the raw picture, GDS instantly
converts the image on the fly, allowing you to see what most viewers would
   display poorly.

Hundreds of thousands of copies of GDS have circulated since February 1991,
when GDS became the premier graphics file viewer and catalog system for

image files.

 USING GDS ON A BBS

GDS is used by hundreds of BBS system operators around the world to manage,
verify, review, categorize and catalog thousands of graphics files. GDS has
many functions specifically designed for BBS system operators (sysops), which
not only make these tasks easier, but can add features to an existing BBS.

     GDS's BBS Features

Instantly view new graphics files, delete junk and move good files.

Catalog CD's to quickly see if content is worth anything.

Catalog downloadable graphics files and provide catalogs to callers.
Note: BBS users love this offering, see the section below about BBS
file catalogs for details about how to determine what's right for
     your system.

Insert your system logo graphic into GDS catalogs automatically. There
are even systems which have random batch files which vary the logo and
placement in order to provide variety.

Provide on-line tagged file cataloging. GDS has a special standardized
user interface designed to insert into an existing BBS. Several BBS
developers are putting specific hooks as well.

Customize system to use GDS as a tool, both for user and system
functions. GDS provides hundreds of command line and batch functions
which can be easily incorporated into an existing BBS.

 CATALOGING YOUR BBS

There are many reasons to provide catalogs of your system. First, users love
it because they can avoid online time and get to just the graphics files which
look interesting. This clears your phone lines and allows you to get more
users on the system.

Catalogs give you a competitive edge against text-only systems. Many users of
BBS systems are frustrated that they do not have a way to preview a large file
before they commit to a download. With GDS catalogs, they can commit to the
catalog download, and then know roughly what to expect when they commit to a
file download.

There are many ways to provide catalogs, because there are many preferences
and organization structures that BBS systems use to categorize files. The
methods which work best are as follows:

Decide on a standard look for your catalogs. Consistency and uniqueness
will eventually become a successful BBS's calling card.

Provide a section which catalogs all areas of the BBS. Even if you have
thousands of graphics files in hundreds of areas, users still one to have
a "one stop shop" type of area on a BBS. Don't try to make lots of areas
     with lots of catalog runs.

Use 25 or more pictures per catalog screen, and try to provide both GIF
and JPEG format. Users with 15, 16 or 24 bit displays really appreciate
JPEG catalogs, and JPEG catalogs are much smaller than their GIF cousins.

Consider providing very dense catalogs for people who want a quick
overview of a huge amount of files. For example, you may want to have a
run of catalogs which has 100 thumbnails per screen at 1024x768 or
1280x1024. This gives power users the ability to use the "brute force"
that makes them feel more powerful. They appreciate this "high end"
attention and will rave about your efforts. Once again, use JPEG to get
     the file size down!
