The following file contains a listing of genealogical and historical
societies in South Carolina. Included in the listing, where known, are
telephone numbers and yearly dues. This listing is donated to the public
domain and may be freely copied. Under no conditions can this listing be
sold or used in any other commercial fashion. If you think this list has any
value, then donate that value in helping your local genealogical society (or
the National Genealogical Society).

If you write to any of the societies on this list for information, remember
to include a self addressed stamped envelop (SASE). Many of these societies
work with a limited budget, supplemented by volunteers, and can not afford to
respond unless a SASE is included in your letter.

                       VITAL RECORDS

Birth and Death Records

Statewide registration of vital statistics began in January 1915. For
information write to:

Office of Vital Records and Public Health Statistics
        2600 Bull Street
        Columbia, SC 29201

Copies of the state records are also available at the courthouse of each
county starting in 1915. You can write to the county clerk for information.
The county clerks also have post-1915 delayed registrations of birth.

Earlier records were kept by some of the larger cities, and are available
from the appropriate county health department, except for a few major cities
where the records are at the city health department.

Marriage Records

Statewide registration of marriages began in July 1950. These records are
located at the Office of Vital Records and Public Health Statistics (address
above).

Before the statewide registration of marriages, the ordinary of the province
could issue a marriage license, or banns could be published in the parish
church. There are some marriage settlement records at the South Carolina
Department of Archives and History from the 1760s to the 1880s. Marriage
information was sometimes recorded in the records of the probate court in the
early 1800s.

Marriage settlements were legal agreements, primarily made by women who had
been married previously. County marriage license records begin about 1900 to
1910 and are in the custody of the probate judge.

Divorce Records

Divorce proceedings are kept by the county court. Divorce was illegal in
South Carolina until 1949, and there are restrictions on the availability of
the records. Write to the individual counties for information.

Remarks:

Birth and Death:
State office has had records since January 1915. City of Charleston births
from 1877 and deaths from 1821 are on file at Charleston County Health
Department. Ledger entries of Florence City births and deaths from 1895 to
1914 are on file at Florence County Health Department. Ledger entries of
Newberry City births and deaths are on file at Newberry County Health
Department. These are the only early records available.

Marriage:
They have records since July 1950 at the address above. Other marriage
records since July 1911 are available from the Probate Judge in the county
where license was issued.

Divorce:
They have records since July 1962 at the address above. Other divorce records
since April 1949 are available from the Clerk of the county where the petition
was filed.
---------
I have that all fees for the above are $3.00 from the address above and that
fees vary for the others. I seem to remember that the $3.00 was going to, I
believe, $5.00 earlier this----
