The following file contains a listing of genealogical and historical
societies in New Jersey. Included in the listing, where known, are telephone
numbers and yearly dues. This listing is donated to the public domain and
may be freely copied. Under no conditions can this listing be sold or used
in any other commercial fashion. If you think this list has any value, then
donate that value in helping your local genealogical society (or the National
Genealogical Society).

If you write to any of the societies on this list for information, remember
to include a self addressed stamped envelop (SASE). Many of these societies
work with a limited budget, supplemented by volunteers, and can not afford to
respond unless a SASE is included in your letter.

                       VITAL RECORDS

Posted-By: xx180 (aa581 - Sandra Rozhon)

New Jersey Dept. Of Health
Bureau of Vital Statistics
CN360
Trenton, NJ 08625-0360

(The Dept. of Health has birth, death and marriage records from June, 1878
to the present. However, due to budget cuts and short staffing, they will no
longer process any requests for information for genealogical purposes. (They
will handle requests for info needed for other reasons.) All genealogical
services have been "suspended indefinitely.")

Archives and History Bureau
State Library Division
State Dept. of Education
185 W. State St.
Trenton, NJ 08625
(609) 292-6260

The NJ State Library Archives Div. has the original vital records for
the period May 1848 to May 1878. (Birth, death, marriage.) They will
process requests by mail for this information for a fee of $4.00 per record.
They also have acquired, from the Dept of Health, the following records on
microfilm: marriage records from June 1878 to 1940, death records from June
1878 to 1940, and birth records from June 1878 to 1923. These microfilmed
records are open for "in-person" research at the Archives Mon-Fri, 8:30-4:30.
The Archives will not process requests by mail for searches of the
microfilmed records.

                       STATE ARCHIVES

New Jersey: Trenton, near the river. Printed family histories, county and
town histories, genealogical periodicals, etc. The New Jersey Archives used
to be right across the hall, with microfilm vital records. I've heard that
this may have changed, though.

The NJ State Archives in Trenton NJ is open from 8:30 A.M. til 4:30 P.M.
Tuesday thru Friday only. They are NOT open Saturday or Monday. The phone
number is (609) 292-6260 and they are located downtown on the basement level
of the State Library Building near the state capitol building. The address is
185 West State Street. You might also be interested in visiting the NJ
State Library upstairs, which has an extensive genealogical collection, not
limited to NJ. (To get to the right section, turn right at the front desk and
go through the glass doors; the law collection is on the left and the
genealogy on the right). The Library is open Monday through Friday from 8:30
til 5:00 (so you can go there for another half-hour after the Archives
close!). There is free parking if you go around to the back of the building.
If the libary is on your right, take the first street to the right after the
library and look for the parking lot on your right. Stop at the guard house
and tell them you are visiting the archives. They will let you park if the
legislature is not in session. Otherwise you can park on the street at 2 hr
meters in front of the library.

Here is some more info you might find useful. When you enter the archives,
you must sign in. You can get a key for one of the lockers out in the hall.
You can store your briefcase and coat there, since you can't bring them into
the Archives. I bring a clipboard and envelopes to keep the loose papers from
getting scattered. Also you must use pencil only - no pens. There are 7 or 8
microfilm readers and 2 reader-printers, all of which you must sign up for.
There is a time limit of 1 1/2 hours if people are waiting (as they usually
are), but you can sometimes sign up for back-to-back slots. The time slots
begin at 9:00, 10:30, 12:00, 1:30, and 3:00. You can sign up for a place 15
minutes before the time slot begins (no advance reservations). Make the best
use of your microfilm reader time by orienting yourself and gathering
together the films you are interested in BEFORE your session on the reader
begins. (I usually plan on getting there 1/2 hour before the time slot I want
to get.) To sign up for a reader, just go to one of the people at the desk.
They are also very helpful with any questions you might have. The system
there is a bit confusing when you visit for the first time, so just ask.
Searches of Vital Records are done differently for different time periods;
for some years, there are statewide indexes - some on microfilm and some in
books. For some years, there are no statewide indexes: the records are
arranged alphabetically for a given year. This is especially true of records
after 1900, so it helps to have a really good guess for which year the event
occurred. The Archives has microfilm copies of birth records up to 1923 and
marriages and deaths up to 1940. There are also wills, naturalization
records, censuses, and lots more. Another good place for doing NJ genealogy
research is the Alexander Library on the Rutgers University campus in New
Brunswick (about an hour's drive NE of Trenton). They have US censuses for NJ
and NJ state censuses in their microfilm area, along with old newspapers,
Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, and city directories for many NJ cities. These
things are in the main part of the library, which is open LATE at night (I
can check the hours if you're interested). The special "NJ room", which has a
big NJ genealogical collection, is only open til 5:00 however.
