The New York Times vs. Senator Coburn: It is a travesty that the Senate 
has failed to vote final approval of a law intended to close a 
gun-control loophole laid bare by last April's bloody massacre on the 
Virginia Tech campus...Fast as you can say stick 'em up, Senator Tom 
Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma and premier orator on the preciousness of 
the Second Amendment, blocked Senate passage. The senator previously 
objected to a suicide prevention bill for troubled veterans, anxious 
that government record-keeping might hamper vets' buying guns. This 
time, he has unspecified "privacy concerns" and even worries that the 
Virginia Tech bill might be a burden on the federal budget.

Castle Doctrine Empowers Mississippi Residents: Within the last week on 
three separate occasions, Jackson residents have taken up firearms to 
defend themselves against assailants. In the most recent case, a man 
shot and killed 20 year old Kenneth Stewman in the 4900 block of 
Rosehaven Drive. Police say Swetman and another man were attempting to 
rob the homeowner. Police say the man who fired the fatal shot will not 
be charged in the case. A state law, known as the Castle Doctrine, 
allows private citizens to use deadly force to protect their homes, 
vehicles or businesses from intruders.

Oops, Wrong Car: An off duty Detroit police officer shot a would-be 
carjacker Sunday night during an attempted robbery in front of the 
officer's home..."The man announced a robbery and carjacking. He 
brandished a weapon, the officer brandished his weapon and the 
perpetrator lost. The officer fired and hit the perpetrator more than 
once. The wounded man was able to flee, but was apprehended a short 
distance away."

Idaho Woman Cleared In Shooting Of Husband: No charges will be pressed 
against the woman who shot and killed her husband a month ago in Swan 
Valley. Today prosecutor Dane Watkins says that Debra Schultz shot her 
husband in an act of self defense. The shooting came after a violent 
relationship that lasted a year.

UK Steps Up Regulation Of Airguns: New laws come into force today to 
tighten up airgun sales. The minimum legal age for buying air weapons 
rises to 18. And across the UK, retailers who sell airguns must now be
