Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.10/384 - Release Date: 7/10/2006 Alan Gottlieb vs. UN: SAF's Alan Gottlieb answers questions about his visit to the recent UN gun-banning conference. (Interesting insight into the subdued role of the usual prohibitionists suspects in the US) http://saf.org/default.asp?p=gottlieb_interview --- Rule Five Reminder: A 12-year-old New Jersey boy found a gun inside his go-kart while riding at a Clinton Township park. ( Any bets on whether the person who lost it was carrying in a pocket, without a pocket holster? Rule Five: Maintain control of your firearm.) http://news.yahoo.com/s/wdiv/20060710/lo_wdiv/9494526 --- Oops, Wrong House: One of three San Antonio men who tried to kick in the door of a home was found dead of a gunshot wound about one block from the location. The homeowner fired eight shots from a second-floor landing, presumably through the still closed door. (While there is room to debate the tactical disadvantage of allowing intruders to breach the door, I'm not very comfortable about firing through doors, at unidentified targets.) http://www.ksat.com/news/9490275/detail.html --- Oops, Wrong Robber: An Arizona man is in jail, facing armed-robbery and theft charges after mistakenly demanding money at gunpoint from a younger man he believed had earlier robbed him. http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/137385 --- Woman Teaches Girls To Hunt: A Michigan woman is portrayed as part of a growing trend, as sporting organizations and other hunting advocates turn to women and teens to bolster the future of hunting in Michigan. http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/regional/index.ssf?/base/sports-18/1152571169256160.xml&storylist=newsmichigan Michigan Lowers Minimum Age For Hunting: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060711/SPORTS10/607110437/1048/SPORTS --- Meanwhile, In Oklahoma...: Opinion piece, which fails to mention that firearm accidents decline year after year, mentions youth hunter-safety courses, offered by the Oklahoma Wildlife Department, as one measure to reduce accidental shootings by children. http://www.enidnews.com/opinion/local_story_191003246.html?keyword=topstory --- Gun-Catalog Endorsement An Issue In Arizona: The Citizens Clean Election Commission is scrutinizing an endorsement of a Republican gubernatorial candidate in a J&G Gun sales catalog. The issue centers around whether or not the catalog is to be considered a legitimate newspaper and, if not, whether the other publicly funded candidate is entitled to matching funds for a "contribution in kind." http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/137398 --- Thailand Continues Firearms Training For Teachers: An elite Thai military unit continues providing handgun training to school teachers in the southern part of the country, where "militants" (Muslim extremists) have attacked schools. There appears to be some debate about funding for the handguns for the teachers. http://nationmultimedia.com/2006/07/11/national/national_30008451.php --- A List Member Comments On "Muzzles Down": I realize these are infantry guys engaged in ground combat...however, when I was in the 82nd Airborne we got DRILLED repeatedly on "muzzles down" when entering and riding in helicopters in particular. Everyone in the 82nd was a grunt first and we often trained in "live fire"... "muzzles down" was SOP with the grab the mag and feel it's way into the magwell while keeping one's eye's moving at least to scan for targets--of course I wasn't getting shot at at the time...nevertheless it's like every generation of soldier has to relearn the same damn things! The advantage I guess I had was that most all of our NCO's /Platoon Sgts, etc. were Vietnam vets who had already learned the hard way and past it on to us (1975-1979). -- Stephen P.
