Could use tips for media server (prob. jellyfin) hosting on a vps reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vixfew · 2023-12-31 20:33 I need a media server, which will be used by several family members, who are not very good with IT stuff. I want to have multiple movies/series there, I think it would be below 5TB mark. With Plex proving time and time again that they're shit, I'm thinking about Jellyfin, on Hetzner vps + storage server. I'm hoping that it would have enough bandwidth (mounted as network share) to stream movies/series (very unlikely to have more than 3-4 users at the same time). Since users aren't going to be IT-savvy, I'm hoping that Jellyfin has an easy to use iPhone and Android clients - it looks like there's a client available, at least. Not sure about how simple is it to set up. I'll be doing the setup in couple days, so, if you have any tips and/or suggestions, that would be very appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-31 20:48 Should be OK. You wouldn't be able to use Plex, despite it being far better for non-techies IMO, anyway as they don't let you host at Hetzner. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vixfew · 2023-12-31 21:02 Yes, I haven't missed the whole Plex and Hetzner fiasco. Better stick with open source stuff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FormerPassenger1558 · 2023-12-31 21:05 Jellyfin in fine but the apps are not as common as for Plex. for instance on Mac's you'll need to use Infuse. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vixfew · 2023-12-31 21:38 Fortunately, no one in anticipated user list uses mac. I'll keep that in mind, thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LavaCreeperBOSSB · 2023-12-31 21:50 I use jellyfin, Infuse is a great client for mac and I think Findroid exists on Android ---------------------------------------------------------------------- boli99 · 2023-12-31 23:41 a 5TB vps is going to be *ex-pen-sive*. you may be better off with a teeny tiny VPS VPNned back to your home server
