Newbie attempting to set up *arrs with Jellyfin on TrueNAS SCALE and seeking some guidance reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mk7sean · 2023-12-31 12:07 This marks my third attempt, with my initial go on an Ubuntu server and the second one on Windows 11, a less-than-ideal choice but a starting point. Now, I'm determined to get it right, and learn how it is done properly, but the process is proving challenging. I'm currently in my first year of University, majoring in Computer Science with a focus on cybersecurity and an interest in becoming a SysAdmin. My server specs are basic—just a 256GB drive for boot and a 1TB drive for storage. While I plan to expand with more drives in the future, this is what I'm working with for now. I want to set up Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Recyclarr, Jellyseerr, Jellyfin, and qBittorrent to use Host Path so that config files save. I also want to use PIA VPN for qBittorrent to hide my traffic. I figured it out after hours of trial and error, Googling, and YouTube videos. I got Sonarr set up, and wanted to set up Recyclarr to test it before I set up anything else. I get the attached error when I try to sync Recyclarr. How can I fix this? On top of that, I was wondering if there is somewhere I can go to find tutorials for this, or maybe a Discord server I can ask for help. It's hard to find my way in this space as a beginner, and this isn't really something my professors are teaching (although I wish they did), so any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! https://preview.redd.it/y7vwjn7oem9c1.png?width=1616&format=png&auto=w ebp&s=fe031b8df9bbb07b53dd3b7770368bade5cceb73 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ystebad · 2023-12-31 12:51 Not much help but I gave up on truenas scale and getting it all setup. To be fair that was about 8 months ago and I’m sure there have been improvements but gpu passthough was a nightmare - kernel didnt even support a 3080 nvidia gpu. I personally ended up on Ubuntu running portainer to manage docker and using docker compose it’s been much easier. Hopefully someone will answer your question but I just thought I’d chime in because been there done that. Cheers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GlassHoney2354 · 2023-12-31 13:36 You didn't give much details so I'm assuming you're completely clueless (I say this with non-derogatory intent :P) Let me preface this by saying I don't use recyclarr and have no idea what it even does. I'm sure you must have seen a stacktrace or two in your time, so just look at the top of the stacktraces to see the actual error. In this case it cannot access the folder `/config/cache` or the file `/config/settings.yml`. I believe these errors can happen when the files also don't exist so the first thing I would check is whether the directory exists, and if it doesn't read through the documentation because you're probably supposed to copy a template `settings.yml` to `/config/`. If the directories and files do exist it's a permission issue -- side tangent: this is good, simply denying permission for non-existent files is better than telling the user the file doesn't exist, like saying 'incorrect credentials' instead of 'incorrect password' when logging out so you can't figure out whether a username/email used for logging in actually exists in the database. -- as a newbie, I was definitely guilty of simply `chmod -R 777 /config/`to give read, write, and execute permissions to all users and although inadvisable, it's probably fine for a configuration directory. There are a lot of resources on linux permissions if you want to do it properly, though. Normally you create a new account and grant permissions to the files/folders recyclarr needs individually (`chown`), giving minimal permissions for the program to function. As someone who started like you, I can highly recommend Proxmox simply for the fact that you can create containers to experiment in. This is very useful from a security standpoint because a container getting compromised means the rest of the system is (generally, naively) safe but it is **especially** useful if you want to learn because you can keep trying stuff out, installing stuff and changing whatever permissions you want inside of the container. When you eventually get stuck or break something and want to start over, you simply delete the container or restore a backup of that container and it's like nothing ever happened. Changes within the container (generally, naively) don't affect the rest of the system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zkvvoob · 2023-12-31 14:17 Personally, I opted for a native-Docker approach, as described here: https://forum.level1techs.com/t/truenas-scale-native-docker-vm-access- to-host-guide/190882 So far, I couldn't be happier with how things have turned out. I've got the best of both worlds: reliable storage and ZFS, along with the ease of use and management that Docker allows. Hope this helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xartin · 2023-12-31 17:00 >I was wondering if there is *somewhere* I can ask for help I'm one of the package maintainers for sonarr and radarr for gentoo. I possibly could aid you with some advise if your in need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mine_username · 2023-12-31 19:37 Run an Ubuntu VM in scale then go with [YAMS](https://yams.media). You can add additional containers as well so if you really want Recyclarr, it has a docker image. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mk7sean · 2023-12-31 19:55 Thanks for the input! Based on some of the other responses, I will probably switch to Proxmox. If no one uses TrueNAS SCALE there is no one for me to learn from lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mk7sean · 2023-12-31 20:20 >You didn't give much details so I'm assuming you're completely clueless Completely clueless? Not quite. Clueless? Definitely! I had the \*arrs working on Windows, so the management of that I definitely have some experience behind. But this is my first time ever using Docker, Kubernetes, etc, so I am definitely clueless in that regard. I'm familiar with Linux permissions and such, and my dad has taught me a lot about shares and how all that works over the last year or so, but I have much to learn if I want to be a SysAdmin one day. >Let me preface this by saying I don't use recyclarr and have no idea what it even does. Yeah I'll probably avoid using Recyclarr. It's supposed to automate the recommended profiles set up by TRaSH Guides, but now probably isn't the time fore me to be learning it >In this case it cannot access the folder /config/cache or the file /config/settings.yml. I believe these errors can happen when the files also don't exist -- I assumed that is what it meant, but I'm a bit confused on how to fix the issue. It should technically have permission to access that path, as I gave it permission to do so, so I'm not quite sure >side tangent: this is good, simply denying permission for non- existent files is better than telling the user the file doesn't exist Good point. That's one of the concepts we learned in our Fundamentals of Computer Science class last semester--defensive programming! Although I wish I could say this practice was intentional >If the directories and files do exist it's a permission issue > >Normally you create a new user and grant permissions to the files/folders recyclarr needs individually (chown), giving minimal permissions for the program to function. That's what I suspected. Although, I gave "Full Control" permissions to the user and group "apps", so it should be able to do whatever it needs to through there... >As someone who started like you, I can highly recommend Proxmox simply for the fact that you can create containers to experiment in. I will try that today. TrueNAS SCALE has been a headache, and people keep suggesting Proxmox, so I think it's time I cave. I can't learn from a OS that no one recommends to use. Side note: Is remote management easy on Proxmox? I know of things like Tailscale, and I've used a ngrok, but am confused on how I would implement such. Thanks a bunch for your guidance on this, I find your welcoming attitude refreshing in a sea of people saying "Just do the thing, duh" (well I can't do the thing because I don't know how to do the thing, that's my point in asking for help!). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mk7sean · 2023-12-31 20:22 What is the difference between native-Docker and TrueNAS SCALE apps? I am very new at this, so I genuinely have no idea and want to learn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mk7sean · 2023-12-31 20:53 >I'm one of the package maintainers for sonarr and radarr for gentoo. I possibly could aid you with some advice if your in need. I will definitely get in contact with you again. >I've never used or heard of Recyclarr until you've mentioned it but that does appear to be a niche optional addition operated by a one person carnival show. if your encountering complications with Recyclarr consider avoiding using it as while it may be beneficial is not required for general functionality. Thanks for the advice, I will stop trying with it >In my experience "hiding" torrent traffic is annoying and torrenting uses weak encryption when it does work. if you used usenet, nzbgeek as the search indexer and nzbget for downloads instead you have a TLS encrypted connection from nzbget to usenet server operator with little additional effort invested nanny sitting a torrent client and prowlarr. Thanks for the suggestion! I asked my dad for more details about usenet and how it works, and I'm surprised I didn't use this sooner! Like I said in my reply to another comment, thank you for your welcoming attitude, in contrast to people saying "Just do the thing, duh" (well I can't do the thing because I don't know how to do the thing, that's my point in asking for help!). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ystebad · 2023-12-31 23:23 Yah I found it very frustrating and the user community was in my limited experience was not at all helpful towards non-experts. Proxmox may have significant gpu pass through issues as well just be aware.
