Suggest me a NAS Software reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defekT1312 · 2023-12-31 12:07 Hey Folks, I'm looking for an Easy to Configure and managing NAS Software which can handle Raid Pools (obviously 😅) and I need SMB and NFS support. Currently I'm using TrueNAS but for my use case it has a bit too much Options and Levers that I can pull. I really need something Simple and Easy to understand like Synology's OS. So far I tried OMW but I'm very unsatisfied with it. I came Across EasyNAS and Rockstor. What do you think? Are they any good or is there even an completely alternative Solution which I didn't discovered yet. Running everything on Proxmox btw. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ziomal12 · 2023-12-31 12:26 What's your use case exactly? And do you really need NAS software? If you want to set it up and forget/not mess with configuration why not Ubuntu (or debian or whatever) and Cockpit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok_Expert_5751 · 2023-12-31 12:30 my personal journey has been: Open Media Vault - I didn't find it met my need. TrueNAS - I found it to complicated for my needs and skill level. Synology - I found it difficult to do things Synology didn't think you should do. TrueNAS - After several years I am back to TrueNAS and very happy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defekT1312 · 2023-12-31 12:33 >What's your use case exactly? Storing my Personal Data, Sharing Media to my Network, Sharing Storage to VM's and CT's. Future Plans: Backup everything encrypted to a Cloud. Pi-Hole, Cloud, PW Manager and maybe more. I will take a look into CasaOS, looks very nice to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ziomal12 · 2023-12-31 12:35 Sounds like all you need is SMB and NFS, which is imho not enough to justify anything more than Ubuntu with Cockpit, consider this option also. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defekT1312 · 2023-12-31 12:38 But who manages my Pool then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DayshareLP · 2023-12-31 12:45 I use Proxmox as a hypervisor and nas. I just installed samba and nfs- kernel-server and share different ZFS datasets. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thehoffau · 2023-12-31 12:47 Buy a Synology? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ziomal12 · 2023-12-31 13:00 In cockpit, if you're using zfs there's also zfs extension for cockpit, just give it a look and decide for yourself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aygotori13 · 2023-12-31 13:57 Openmediavault is perfect, i use it for almost 10 years 👍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExaminationSerious67 · 2023-12-31 13:57 I am very happy with my purchase of UnRaid. Just easy to manage, does ask that I can see, don't know about raid pools. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Waddoo123 · 2023-12-31 13:58 Unraid? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user3872465 · 2023-12-31 14:14 started wiht OMV then Freenas then Truenas Core then Scale, and now jsut hating it. Am movint to PVE with Samba and NFS in a container. Or just take the debian aproach and do it yourself completly with a webUI like Cockpit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skotticus · 2023-12-31 15:04 People suggesting solutions with ZFS without knowing anything about your budget for hardware are not doing you any favors. ZFS snapshots are great for backing up, but you can't easily grow the size of your server storage over time with it— you pretty much have to know what you need ahead of time, and additions can be very expensive because you often have to add more than one disk at a time. ZFS-based solutions are *an* option, but ZFS is the new shiny toy that's in vogue right now, so choose carefully. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- forwardslashroot · 2023-12-31 15:42 Try the plain Debian with SnapRAID and mergerfs. For ui, install Cockpit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nibb31 · 2023-12-31 16:13 Just run Samba in Proxmox. Proxmox handles ZFS ZRAID natively. NAS software is just a convenient Web UI for an SMB server that you only really need to configure once. It's all a bit overkill for what it does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samandiriel · 2023-12-31 19:27 I've not used cockpit myself, how does it compare to webmin, assuming you have used both? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shimeike · 2023-12-31 21:54 Hard to answer if you don't explain what was unsatisfactory with OMV. I run OMV in a VM on top of Ubuntu Server with no dissatisfaction at all. OMV is basically just a layer on top of Debian, so whatever you can do with Debian you can do with OMV. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whatisuser · 2023-12-31 22:04 Ubuntu with the features you need installed. NAS software is good, but I always end up hitting a feature wall and reverting back to a ‘normal’ OS.
