First homelab help reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kazeazen · 2023-12-31 05:59 Hi Everyone! I’m looking to get a homelab setup started, but im not sure on the various requirements needed, spec wise, to get something going. My current plans for the first computer will be: -NAS -Minecraft server using auto-mcs -Plex -Pi-hole -SIEM/SOAR I’d also like to spin up vm’s easily so i can play around with various cybersec labs. Down the line id like to get some type of self hosted vpn like tailscale. I’d also just like to add on different self hosted software as the need comes up. As well as acquiring my own home router, and a firewall. Ive seen someone post this computer before, and it looks to be alright, but im not sure if i can add additional internal hdds, nor do i know anything about the transcoding needed for plex, budget is around 250-300 if possible, down to buy refurbished computers like the one i listed below Dell OptiPlex 7040 Small Business PC, 22" LCD Monitor, Gen 6 Core i5-6500, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 1 TB SSD, Windows 10 Pro, Desktop Computer, HDMI, 2 Displayport - 250$~ Also open to any cool self-hosted software that anyone is using! i still am not 100% sure what else i want to do with my homelab. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting-Error · 2023-12-31 06:16 Suggestion for VMs: ProxMox. Not that easy to understand at first, but very powerful once you do. I recommend running ProxMox directly on the machine (bare metal). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting-Error · 2023-12-31 06:19 Regarding the PC, it’s good for that price. For the firewall, you will probably need something with multiple Ethernet ports for better performance. I have yet to try OpnSense on my Proxmox for that reason; need to get an Ethernet to USB adapter to have extra Ethernet ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kazeazen · 2023-12-31 07:33 directly on machine means like just like installing normal software, rather than doing it through something like docker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting-Error · 2023-12-31 07:44 Proxmox becomes your OS, just like any other, Windows, Mac, Linux The only thing to note is that once you set it up, everything will need to be done by connecting directly to it through a web browser. You won’t be able to do anything else with it. But it’s very powerful with the least amount of overhead running VMs and LXCs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sinamics · 2023-12-31 09:50 I would recommend these as the most basic setup: - Proxmox as your hypervisor. - Add a VM to run portainer. - For VPN, self host ztnet. - Home Assistant if you want to impress your wife with some cool stuff. - Frigate for NVR. - Truenas - Pihole Further down the line, you might want to access those apps using domain name, lookup Authentik or Authelia as your auth layer, and traefik or nginx as your reverse-proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aygotori13 · 2023-12-31 14:03 Proxmox is your solution!
