Finding a Good Balance Between Security and Ease of Access for Remote Media Server Access reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ReesterB · 2023-12-31 05:58 I am very new to hosting my media server and am just now learning the ropes to Docker, Portainer, and SMB (all of which I am using now). I started down the rabbit hole with just hosting a simple Plex server, but then realized I would want to host so much more than what Plex was meant to host, and additionally, Plex did not support reading EDL files for movies. I moved over to Docker and am now hosing multiple containers on my media server which is running Ubuntu Server with Casa OS. I also swapped from using Plex to simply sharing my movies and shows through SMB and watching them through MRMC which supports EDL files and has an app on IOS for use. All this to say, now I am needing to cross the bridge of accessing all my containers and media outside my home network and for that I am still unsure of what I should do. I have scraped the surface when it comes to understanding Reverse-Proxying and Cloudflare tunneling, but I know two things for certain, whatever option I choose it needs to be easy to get access to when away from home (since my parents who aren’t the most tech savvy will be also using it) and it needs to keep my home network secure. Any thoughts on the best approach to this and how I can accomplish it? Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermyx · 2023-12-31 07:36 Go the tailscale route. It is the least risk. From there you can venture further if you want to better understand network security and exposing your services
